Louisiana Environmental Education Symposium

Join us February 19-20, 2016 for a plethora of fun, hands-on, environmentally-based educational opportunities while we show you how to "Explore the Natural World" with your students! Earn CLUs, network with educators and local scientists, and go home with great ideas for your classroom.

Presenter Proposals

The Louisiana Environmental Education Commission is accepting proposals for hour-long concurrent sessions to be held at the 19th Annual Environmental Education State Symposium. This year’s conference will be held at the Baton Rouge Marriott, February 19-20, 2016.

All concurrent sessions will take place on Saturday, February 20, 2016. The theme for this conference will be “Exploring the Natural World.” It is not necessary for presenters to adhere to the theme, but sessions that complement the theme are encouraged.

The preferred method for submitting proposals is by web form at http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/2016-environmental-education-state-symposium-presenter-proposal-form.

The Louisiana Environmental Education Commission has a mission to create a comprehensive and balanced environmental education initiative that will result in environmentally literate citizens who will effectively and constructively solve existing environmental problems, prevent new ones, and maintain a sustainable environment for future generations.

Events at the Texas Chenier Plains Refuge Complex

American Ag Trip

To improve and expand our existing relationships with students and universities in the field of agricultural, animal and veterinary sciences, Evonik launched the American Ag Trip on facebook a few weeks ago. The aim of this initiative is to support interested students in familiarizing themselves with the international feed industry business. We plan to select a total of 10 students based on a fixed set of application criteria and face to face interviews, and afterwards, take them to various US agriculture production/ processing sites during the summer of 2013 (expenses paid). There, they will meet industry experts, visit some of Evonik's key customers in feed and live production and gain a deep insight into the feed industry. The application is open until March 15, 2013 on facebook.com/Evonikfeedadditives. Applicants who fit the criteria set out in the facebook questionnaire will be invited to Evonik’s sales office in Atlanta, GA USA or Hanau, Germany in the spring of 2013 where they'll meet the Evonik team for interviews. Successful candidates will be informed of their participation in the American Ag trip shortly thereafter. We think that your institution would be an excellent source for candidates and kindly ask for your support in putting up the enclosed posters on your bulletin boards where they are most visible for students. It would be also very helpful and we would appreciate if you could personally motivate students to apply. Please note that applications for the American Ag trip can be submitted via the above facebook site, only. LDEQ EMERGENCY RESPONSE training

The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) is sponsoring free training sessions that will give you an understanding of LDEQ EMERGENCY RESPONSE. This session will provide an overview of the role and activities handled by the Emergency Response Division including what happens when there’s an emergency situation, LDEQ’s role and response during emergencies, procedures regarding complaint and spill reporting and the Single Point of Contact (SPOC).Please register for one of the sessions below:

For more than 30 years, the Wilderness Institute has been offering this innovative immersion program focused on conservation and environment in the Northern Rockies. Out-of-state students can participate as exchange students for the fall semester only or for an entire academic year. _____________________________________

Field Ecology and Conservation

In Wilderness and Civilization, a small community of 25 students gets the best of both worlds: campus and field learning. Students spend 30 days in the field throughout the program, learning firsthand how the ecology, politics, history, and culture of a place shape conservation efforts. Field trips include a ten-day backpack into the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area and shorter trips to Yellowstone National Park, the Flathead Reservation, and the Blackfoot, Bitterroot and Mission Valleys. Field trips complement campus-based classes by exploring the specific ways that managers, community activists, tribal members, and landowners meet today's conservation challenges.

Small Learning Community

Program courses at the University of Montana campus are limited to Wilderness and Civilization students to encourage critical thinking and creative problem-solving. Students study wilderness and conservation issues from a variety of perspectives including literature, policy, art, ecology, economics, and Native American studies. Classes are taught by faculty from across campus, teachers who bring unique experience and expertise to the program and share a remarkable dedication to student learning. Program faculty include award-winning teachers, internationally-renowned scientists, and inspiring artists and writers. Students earn a Wilderness Studies Minor upon successful completion of the program.

Practical Experience through Internships

Students learn practical skills and build their resumes through internships specifically focused on an area of their interest. Wilderness and Civilization students are placed with one of hundreds of educational, agency, and non-profit organizations in the Missoula area.

Because the Wilderness and Civilization Program is limited to 25 students, interested students need to apply soon. Applications can be obtained online at www.cfc.umt.edu/wc. The program is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors of any major with a GPA of 3.0 or greater. We encourage participation of out-of-state students through National Student Exchange and other similar programs. ^ The general application deadline is April 1^st.

Subject: Enviroschool Update

The Enviroschool program at the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) is the environmental education outreach arm of the Agency that provides training for communities, businesses, and other organizations on a number of regulatory topics. The goal of this program is for the attendees to become informed about the environmental regulatory process and to maintain and improve environmental compliance. The Enviroschool program is now offering tailored training sessions at no cost to attendees focusing on topics and/or environmental regulations affecting your industry or community. If you are interested in hosting a LDEQ speaker/trainer for your association meeting or if you are interested in arranging a day workshop for your group, please contact me for more information.
