Conference: Students of Agronomy, Soil and Environmental Sciences

The Iowa State Agronomy Club invites you and your college to join us for what will be an amazing conference on March 23 and 24, 2012. Our club, as well as other students in agronomy, crop science, environmental science and related majors from all across North America will be converging on Iowa State University in Ames, IA to interact with peers and industry representatives in our area of study.
The event, called the SASES Regional Meetings, is sponsored by the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America & Soil Science Society of America’s student organization called SASES – Students of Agronomy, Soil and Environmental Sciences. Those attending the Regionals have the opportunity to experience the agricultural industry in a new area of the country, meet with potential employers at our industry networking event and make friendships with students of similar interests from all around the United States through two social events.
The biggest portion of the event includes the industry tours which set out across the state of Iowa to visit various agriculture businesses. Iowa’s agricultural industry ranks 1st in the nation in corn and soybean production, boast some of the most productive land in the world and produces 25% of the country's supply of ethanol. Some of the tours will include alternative energy production such as wind and biofuels, facilities of some of the nation’s largest seed companies, livestock farms and even a winery.
No SASES club membership is needed to attend this event as we invite students in any related majors. Registration for this event is just $20 per person and includes meals and a t-shirt.  For more information and to register, please visit us online at www.SASESRegionals.com. We also invite you to like us on Facebook at SASES Regionals 2012 and/or follow us on Twitter at @SASESRegionals2. Registration is NOW OPEN, but not for long. The deadline is fast approaching - Feb 24, 2012. If you are interested in attending the event, but need more time to register, please contact Rachel Owen at rkowen@iastate.edu.

2012 State of the Coast Preparing for a Changing Future Call for Abstracts

2012 State of the CoastPreparing for a Changing Future
Call for Abstracts

Deadline for Abstract Submittal
- February 10, 2012
The mission of the State of the Coast (SOC) conference is to provide a forum to learn from recent advances in science and engineering as they relate to coastal Louisiana, to ensure that relevant and current knowledge is applied to existing and future coastal restoration and protection efforts, and to use that information to effectively inform management, policy and decision making. The SOC will focus on the challenge of a dynamic working coast. Louisiana's coastal landscape is rapidly changing, from continued deterioration of the coastal wetlands, to injuries from storms and other events, to changes in ecosystem service capacity, politics, and economics. This conference will focus on the challenges facing Louisiana as we acknowledge a dynamic environment, an uncertain future, and a continue efforts toward a sustainable landscape. All individuals interested in Louisiana's coastal restoration and protection activities are invited to submit an abstract for oral or poster presentation. Oral and poster presentations will be selected from abstract submissions, and abstracts from all presentations will be included in the conference proceedings. A Student Poster Contest will be judged during the Poster Reception on June 26, 2012.
NOTE - We encourage anyone interested to submit a session for consideration. If you would like to submit a session, please submit a separate page with the Session Topic, Session Description and the presenters' names and titles of their presentations. The presenters' abstracts can be attached to the same email.
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Abstracts must be received by February 10, 2012. Submit abstracts to stateofthecoast@crcl.org.
You will receive an automatic response email once received. If you do not receive a reply email, please call the Coalition at (888) - LACOAST.
IMPLICATIONS: One of the most important aspects of this conference is not only to share our knowledge or data but to inform the audience about how your contribution could impact the future of coastal restoration and protection planning and implementation. Therefore, all submittals will be required to include a 150-word description of the implications of this research/knowledge for future coastal planning and implementation.

POSTING OF PRESENTATIONS: To facilitate information exchange of the material presented, authors will be asked as a condition of abstract acceptance to provide electronic copies of their oral presentations and posters for posting onto the conference website after the conference. Authors will have the option of redacting any unpublished or preliminary information they do not wish to have accessible by the public.
SESSION TOPICS: The first State of the Coast Conference in Baton Rouge in 2010 included sixty-three oral presentations in twenty-one contributed sessions, organized around eighteen topical themes. We anticipate continued interest in many of these topics for the 2012 conference in New Orleans. Louisiana Community Oil Spill Forum, Baton Rouge, Shreveport, New Orleans, Nov 19

Community Oil Spill Forum invites members of the public to learn from and ask questions of oil spill scientists

The Central Gulf of Mexico Center for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence (COSEE), housed at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Lab (GCRL) is partnering with Louisiana Sea Grant, Audubon Aquarium of the Americas and Sci-Port: Louisiana’s Science Center to offer a Community Oil Spill Forum at each location on Saturday, November 19th.
One and one half years after the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill began in 5000 feet of water off the southeast coast of Louisiana, many questions remain about the effects of this catastrophe.  The Community Oil Spill Forum has been designed to address some of these questions for members of the general public, including adults and their children over the age of 12.  Classroom teachers who attend will earn continuing learning units (CLUs).  The event will feature presentations by scientists geared to a general level of understanding, an opportunity to ask questions of the scientists and activities that will clarify aspects of the oil spill – specifically seafood tasting and turtle rehabilitation.
The event will be a videoconference among the three partner sites with all speakers presenting to and answering questions asked at all sites.   Speakers at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge include resident scientists:  Dr. Ed Overton will provide an overview of the oil spill event.  Dr. Julie Anderson will discuss dispersant use.  Dr. Lucina Lampila will explain the current knowledge regarding seafood safety.  At the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans, Ms. Suzanne Smith, of the Louisiana Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Rescue Program, will discuss rehabilitation of large animals.  At Sci-Port: Louisiana’s Science Center in Shreveport, Dr. Jessie Kastler, Gulf Coast Research Laboratory and producer of SpillScience.com, will summarize lessons of the oil spill and how science uncovers them.
Registration for this event is strongly encouraged because space in videoconferencing facilities at each location is limited.  Links to register at each location and more information about the event are available at http://cosee-central-gom.org/community_forum_la.htm.
Contact Dianne Lindstedt at Louisiana Sea Grant, 225-578-1558, lsged@lsu.edu; Tricia LeBlanc at Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, 504-378-2675, tleblanc@auduboninstitute.org; or Michele McKee at Sci-Port: Louisiana’s Science Center, mmckee@sciport.org, (318) 424-8688, for more information.
