Waterfowl research

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is working with the USGS and the University of Georgia in conducting waterfowl research, primarily on blue winged teal.  During the next 3 weeks crews will be attempting to capture blue winged teal in TX and LA.  Capture days in this area will be Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  Capture sites will be varying each day between Beaumont and Anahuac NWR.  The remaining days of the week, crews will be at other locations in Louisiana.  Birds will be aged, sexed, banded, and sampled for various avian diseases.  Crews will attempting to capture birds using rocket nets and volunteers are welcome to come and assist.  Sites will be muddy and water could be as deep as 2 feet, so dress and plan accordingly.  If capture attempts are successful, volunteers can help with removing birds from the nets, holding birds while banding and sampling occurs, and releasing birds.  We will attempt to capture birds anytime they cooperate between 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM.  If capture times shift for the following days, an email will be sent out.  

Emails will be sent out each night with directions as to where the crews will be banding the following day.

This innovative Research Experience for Undergraduates Program takes place in 3 locations:

    • On the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa reservation near Cloquet, MN
    • At Salish Kootenai College in Pablo, Montana
    • At St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, University of Minnesota, in Minneapolis, Minnesota

This REU introduces undergraduate students to interdisciplinary research on sustainable land and water resources that is essential for improving management practices. Students will work on one of three teams using an interdisciplinary team-oriented approach that emphasizes quantitative and predictive methods. Student projects will integrate the Earth-surface dynamics, geology, ecology, limnology and paleolimnology, and hydrology principles and techniques required for sustainable land and water management and restoration.


Teams: St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, University of Minnesota : Stream restoration-related experimental work; Salish Kootenai College , Montana: Effects of surface water management practice on groundwater resources; Fond du Lac Reservation in northern Minnesota: Paleolimnology and current habitat conditions of wild rice lakes. An All-Team Gathering at the conclusion of the program will bring all teams together to celebrate their summer research in a research symposium, with talking circles to discuss research in a community context, and hands-on experiments in St. Anthony Falls Laboratory facilities.

The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) is soliciting applications from interested undergraduate students and faculty mentors at all Louisiana universities and colleges.  UROP, established in 1992 by the Louisiana Sea Grant College Program, offers the Louisiana undergraduate community funding to support hands-on research experiences in marine and coastal resource issues. Previously funded projects have dealt with topics such as coastal ecology, fisheries, aquaculture, environmental engineering, and genetics. 

A maximum of ten projects will be funded for the March 2014 to December 2014 period; each faculty member will receive up to $2500 to cover student wages, supplies, and necessary travel.  Both student wages and academic credit may be earned concurrently if the policies of your institution allow this practice. Full-time undergraduate students at all Louisiana colleges and universities are eligible. 

A written final report of research accomplishments and findings is required, and UROP students must present their findings at LSU during a Louisiana Sea Grant sponsored event (limited travel funds will be provided to UROP students from other universities to attend this event).  In addition, UROP students will be required to submit abstracts of their research results for a poster session or similar event at a statewide conference related to coastal issues.  Louisiana Sea Grant will provide funds to cover registration fees for this conference should a UROP student’s abstract be accepted for presentation.  Students are also encouraged both to present their findings at regional, national and international conferences and to publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

SUMMER 2013 OCEAN SCIENCES
RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR UNDERGRADUATES
OVERVIEW
In summer of 2013, Mote Marine Laboratory will host a 10-week, National Science Foundation-funded program focused on providing research experiences in estuarine science to 10 undergraduate students. Students will be paired with Mote scientists and conduct research on major threats to estuaries such as aquatic
pollution, natural toxins, habitat alteration, and coral reef decline. Students will gain experience in science communication by presenting the results of their independent project in a manuscript-style research paper and orally at a laboratory-wide poster presentation. Students will also attend research seminars, workshops on career skills in science, and may have the opportunity to present their research findings at professional conferences. 

ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible for the Mote REU Program, students must be:
• U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. or its territories
• Currently enrolled in a degree program (full-time or part-time) leading to a baccalaureate degree. Students cannot have already graduated at the time of their internship.
• First-time REU participants
• Available for the duration of the program, May 26th-August 3rd (subject to change)

In addition, applicants must:

Possess a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher (on a 4-point scale)
Make efforts to receive academic credit for participation in the REU Program

TRAVEL, STIPEND, & HOUSING
Students participating in the REU program will receive:
• Stipend of $5,000 over the 10-week period

Ghost Fishing Crab Trap Study

We are looking for someone to help with a derelict crab trap project funded through April 2013.  An official announcement will soon be working its way through official HR channels as an RA position.  However, in the meantime we could also hire a student worker, transient worker, etc.  We are looking for either one or two individuals who could help with a ghost fishing crab trap study along the coast and an effort to develop an education and outreach program about marine debris and derelict crab traps.   Other duties might include contacting potential partners for next year’s derelict crab trap rodeos.  If you know of anyone, please have them contact me.

Research Experiences for Undergraduates

The LSU Department of Environmental Sciences seeks applications for one Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) position.  The undergraduate student will spend 8 weeks in the summer of 2012 conducting research in a chemical oceanography laboratory and in a microbiology laboratory. 

The research will include microbiological analyses of environmental samples, molecular analysis of microbes and microbial communities in response to changing environmental parameters such as exposure to Deepwater Horizon oil, analyses of pigments and nutrients in water samples collected from the Louisiana coast, field collection of samples in Port Fourchon, LA and in Grand Isle, LA, analysis of phytoplankton and zooplankton, use of remote sensing for ground-truthing data, and other topics of interest. 

The student will be expected to maintain a laboratory notebook and participate in weekly lab meetings.  At the end of the 8 weeks, the student will present his/her findings in a 30-minute presentation and in the form of a scientific manuscript. 

The student must be mature, responsible, capable of working independently, and have a strong background in biology and chemistry (2 semesters of general biology and 2 semesters of general chemistry, and a B or higher average in the 2-4 semesters). 

The student will be conducting research in the laboratories of Dr. Crystal N. Johnson (http://www.environmental.lsu.edu/johnson.shtml) and Dr. Ed Laws (http://www.environmental.lsu.edu/edlaws.shtml). 

Students will receive a stipend of up to $4,500, depending on level of expertise and successful completion of the REU program.  Successful completion of the REU program entails maintenance of laboratory notebooks, presentation of results at weekly lab meetings, substantial progress towards their projects, and the final manuscript and PowerPoint presentations. 

A moderate budget will also be provided for relocation to Baton Rouge and shared housing on the LSU campus.

The REU participant will be selected based on high school and undergraduate grade point averages (minimum 3.0), ACT scores (minimum 20), letters of recommendation from three teachers or professors, a 1,500-word essay demonstrating his/her interest in science, and formal interviews.

Oregon Sea Grant Summer Scholars Program

 The Oregon Sea Grant Summer Scholars program is seeking undergraduates who would like to get an inside look at marine science and resource management careers by spending the summer working on a marine science project for a state or local agency. Oregon Sea Grant plans to select up to nine Summer Scholars, each of whom will spend 10 weeks this summer working with a marine research, outreach, education or public policy agency or institution in Oregon. Potential projects range from collecting and analyzing biological data to developing museum exhibits and assisting on information campaigns.

 

Any undergraduate student who will have completed two years of study and is currently enrolled in any U.S. college or university may apply. Students of color, from first nations, non-traditional students, and those from other diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. This opportunity seeks students from a variety of disciplines whose degree majors are not specifically marine science-based.  Students studying journalism, biology, ecology, zoology, environmental science, education, political science, or economics, as well as oceanography or fish and wildlife may all be interested in applying.

 

Selected students will be awarded a $3,000 stipend to offset living expenses during the ten week fellowship. The stipend will be paid in two installments, one upon arrival and one halfway through the fellowship. Student housing will be provided to those students who need it.  A small number of need-based assistance grants may be available to cover travel expenses and will require a supplemental application once students are selected.

McNeese State University Alumni Association Undergraduate Scholar Program

Biosphere 2 research for undergraduates

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program in environmental and Earth system sciences at Biosphere 2 

The University of Arizona will be holding a 10-week Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program this summer in environmental and Earth system sciences at Biosphere 2 (B2 http://www.b2science.org/earth/outreach/reu). Students will participate in a variety of activities that will help them pursue a career in environmental sciences. Students will conduct their own research under a mentor, interact with other participants and scientists, and present research findings in a formal symposium setting.  A unique part of the B2 REU experience will be the opportunity to interact with the public who visit B2 on tour and to obtain training in outreach related to their research topics.  Additionally, students will participate in professional development workshops, an ethics in science workshop, and field trips to local attractions.  Students in their Sophomore or Junior years from a wide range of disciplines and interests including biology, ecology, plant sciences, hydrology, soil science, geology, atmospheric science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, or computer science should apply. Students from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply. Only U.S. citizens or permanent residents are eligible for this NSF funded program.

 Research at Biosphere 2 aims to catalyze interdisciplinary thinking and understanding about the Earth, its living systems, and its future. Students in the REU program will conduct research in the Earth system and environmental sciences that examines some facet of soil-water-atmosphere-plant interactions.  Improving understanding of these interactions is important in gaining insight into the impacts and causes of global environmental change and variation.  Key to research at B2 is the use of methods and techniques that allow linking across scales.  Additionally, some REU projects will be conducted in partnership with the southwestern Critical Zone Observatory (http://www.czo.arizona.edu/).  Projects will focus on a variety of topics that include (but aren't limited to): coupling ecohydrology and biogeochemistry, investigating abiotic and biotic contributions to ecosystem processes, integrating measurements across scales, using innovative tools to link climate and ecological function, and modeling of ecosystem and soil processes.

Scholarship Information & Requirements
A minimum of one graduate and one undergraduate scholarship will be awarded in 2012.
Preference is given to applicants currently enrolled at a Louisiana institution.  Exceptions may be considered under special circumstances. 
Scholarships will be awarded to students majoring in one of the following fields:  Entomology, Plant Pathology, Weed Science, Botany, Microbiology, Biology, Agronomy, Plant Science, Horticulture, Agribusiness, and Vocational Agriculture.
Each scholarship will be a minimum of $2,000.00.
The deadline for applying is January 10, 2012.
 A student can receive an LACA scholarship only once.
An official university transcript(s) from all institutions is required. 
 Two letters of recommendation are required. 
Winners are invited and encouraged to attend the Louisiana Agricultural Technology & Management Conference on February 15-17, 2012.  The scholarships will be awarded during the General Session on Wednesday afternoon, February 15th.
Qualifications:
Applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or above.
Applicants who are full time UNDERGRADUATE or GRADUATE students at an accredited Louisiana academic institution are preferred.  However, applicants, who are part time because of special situations or following an approved curriculum on-line at an accredited university, will be given serious consideration.
Undergraduate students must have completed a minimum of 45 semester hours or its equivalent prior to application.
Graduate students must have selected a major professor and must be engaged in his/her research project.
Applicants must submit an OFFICIAL university transcript(s) from each academic institution attended, and these must be received before the application deadline.  The transcript can be mailed, shipped or sent electronically by the university directly to the scholarship chairperson.   Transcripts may be sent by students but they must be an official copy with the university seal.
Each applicant must submit an essay stating why he or she feels qualified to receive a scholarship.
The essay must be a minimum of 200 words.
In the essay, the student should demonstrate their writing and communication skills.
Two current letters of recommendation must be submitted prior to the application deadline.
One letter must be written by a professor in an ag related field.
The individuals writing letters of recommendation must mail these directly to the chairperson of the scholarship committee.
Work experience in agriculture is highly desirable.
Extracurricular activities are desirable.
