Coastal Science Assistantship Program (CSAP)

The Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) continues its support of a graduate assistantship opportunity called the Coastal Science Assistantship Program (CSAP).  This program provides graduate assistant stipends for up to three years to Master of Science students both enrolled full-time at Louisiana colleges/universities and involved in research relevant to Louisiana coastal protection and restoration efforts (see: THE MASTER PLAN - Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority of Louisiana).  The program will both expose students to CPRA activities and provide a potential avenue for recruitment of new CPRA personnel.

The Louisiana Sea Grant (LSG) College Program will administer these assistantships with funding provided by CPRA.  The assistantships will be available to all faculty pursuing appropriate coastal protection and restoration-related research at Louisiana colleges/universities to fund new, outstanding Master of Science students.  Up to fournew students will be funded each academic year based on evaluations of applications submitted by faculty members.  The annual student stipend is $25,000 for up to three years; however, CSAP funds may also be used to defray costs for graduate assistant benefits and graduate assistant tuition as necessary under the policies and procedures of the various institutions.  The total award (stipend plus benefits) will not exceed $25,000 per year for up to three years under any circumstances.  CSAP funds may not be expended on travel, supplies, equipment, or other such budget items.

Applications will be reviewed and scored by CPRA in the following five categories: Scientific Merit, Relevancy to CPRA, Originality, Body of Knowledge, and Credibility. Applications from faculty must be delivered to Matthew Bethel (see below) by 6 December 2013; a decision on award of the assistantships will be made by CPRA by 31 January 2014.  Funding should be available 1 June 2014.  Complete information on CSAP plus program requirements, examples of applications that have been selected for funding, and application procedures including conflicts of interest disclosure guidelines and requirements are available at Louisiana Sea Grant - Coastal Science Assistantship Program.   For additional information, please contact either:

Performance Evaluation of Water Circulators for Split-Pond Systems
Description: Split pond systems (SPS) have been proposed as an alternative culture method to increase the efficiency of pond aquaculture production. Unlike conventional ponds, fish are confined in a relatively small area (20% of total pond area) and the remaining area (80%) is used as an algal growth basin that serves as a water treatment area. Water is actively circulated between the two sections during the daytime. As fish are confined in the relatively small basin at rather high densities, the water circulator is indispensable and critical for maintaining fish in SPS. Appropriate design and performance evaluation of water circulators are needed in order to enhance the productivity in SPS. The student thesis will evaluate the performance of water circulators as it relates to the production efficiency of channel and hybrid catfish in SPS. A mixture of laboratory and field responsibilities will serve students with an interest to apply basic biology and engineering principles in an applied aquaculture setting.
Qualifications: M.S. in aquaculture, fisheries, biology, or related field, minimum GPA of 3.0, and GRE score of 1,000+ (verbal + quantitative) for GRE exams prior to Nov 1, 2011 and GRE of 290+ (verbal + quantitative) for GRE exams after Nov 1, 2011 are required for regular admission. Applicants with scores below the regular admission and substantial experience are also encouraged. Minimum TOEFL score of 550 for international students. Strong writing skills and computer proficiency are required. Demonstrated experiences with maintenance of animals/livestock, familiarity with aquaculture, analytical laboratory experience, and basic plumbing and construction skills are all desirable qualifications.
Stipend: $17,800 year 1; $18,800 year 2; in-state tuition.

Ph.D. student: modeling forest disturbances


Graduate student opportunity in modeling forest disturbances at the University of Idaho.
Funding is available for a Ph.D. student to study forest responses and vulnerability to climate change and natural disturbances, with an emphasis on bark beetle outbreaks. Project goals include incorporating a model of mountain pine beetle outbreaks into an ecosystem model; assessing the influence of future climate changes on outbreaks; and quantifying the effects on forest dynamics, including carbon cycling. Research will be conducted jointly with Oregon State University using the Community Land Model (www.cgd.ucar.edu/tss/clm). Funding is available for five years at $24,000/year plus tuition/fees and health insurance. The successful candidate will have a background in geography, ecology, biogeosciences, atmospheric science, entomology, or a related field. Desirable qualifications include quantitative skills, familiarity with mechanistic ecosystem modeling and computer programming, excellent written and oral communication skills, and a research‐based M.S. thesis. Graduate Student Position: Early Detection of Forest Health Threats


A Master’s level graduate student position is available in the Applied Forest Ecology lab of Dr. Steve Chhin (www.msu.edu/~chhin) in the Department of Forestry (www.for.msu.edu) at Michigan State University (MSU) (www.msu.edu).
The graduate student will primarily conduct field and laboratory work for a project recently funded by the USDA Forest Service (Forest Health Protection program). The general objective of the project is to promote field‐based application of non‐destructive technologies that will allow rapid, early detection of emerald ash borer (EAB) in the Great Lakes region. Non‐destructive technologies that will be examined include acoustic tomography and infrared thermography.
The preferred start date for this position is May 2013 (summer semester) but applicants starting in August 2013 (fall semester) will also be considered.
Qualifications: Applicants should preferably have a BS in forestry, biology, ecology, environmental sciences, or a similarly related natural resource field. Preference will be given to applicants that are highly self‐motivated, possess a strong work ethic, and have strong oral and written communication skills. A background or strong interest in conducting field based research and working in a laboratory environment is desirable. A cumulative GPA greater than 3.0 in undergraduate coursework is preferred.

M.S. Graduate Assistantship in Community Ecology at the University of Alabama


The Howeth Lab in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alabama invites applications for a M.S. Graduate Assistantship in community ecology beginning Spring or Fall 2013. A highly motivated student is sought to study metacommunity dynamics of zooplankton among forest ponds in different stages of succession. The research will include observational studies of pond communities in the Talladega National Forest and pond mesocosm experiments at the University of Alabama Tanglewood Biological Station. Graduate Assistantships in Watershed Sciences at Louisiana State University


I am seeking to recruit two students to pursue a PhD degree in Renewable Natural Resources with an area of concentration in Watershed Sciences. The students will conduct soil and water sample collections in Southwest Louisiana over a period of two years, and will analyze petroleum pollution of hydrogen sulfide and BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes) in various water bodies. The goal of the research is to assess transfer and environmental fate of the toxic chemical compounds in the coastal rivers and estuaries.
Minimal qualifications include a background in water quality or a similar discipline (e.g. soil chemistry, environmental toxicology, hydrology etc.). A strong work ethic, strong academic record, evidence of excellent written and quantitative skills, and the ability to work both as part of a team and independently are critical, in addition to possessing a valid U.S. driver's license.

Research Assistantship

Applied Plant Ecology: Assessment of Procedures for Temporary Stabilization of
Soils During Transportation Construction in Illinois.

Dr. Peter Minchin is inviting applications from qualified students for a
Research Assistantship in the Department of Biological Sciences, Southern
Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), Illinois, starting August 16, 2012.
The successful applicant would be expected to enroll in the SIUE Graduate
School and commence a Master of Science degree under Dr. Minchin's direction in
fall, 2012.  Applicants should have completed a Bachelor's degree in biology,
environmental science or a related field and be interested in undertaking a two-
year Master's project in the general area of applied plant ecology.  My lab
focuses on applied community ecology, particularly the conservation and
restoration of plant communities (http://www.siue.edu/~pminchi/).  The
applicant would work on an existing project funded by the Illinois Center for
Transportation, the aim of which is to assess plant species and site
preparation methods for the temporary stabilization of soils during
transportation construction in Illinois.  Field experiments will be performed
at four sites in Illinois and will involve several days of travel each month to
set up plantings and collect data.  The successful applicant must be prepared
to undertake both physical work in the field as well as data preparation and
analysis in the lab.  A driver's license is essential and skills in data
management and statistical analysis are highly desirable.  The RA includes a
monthly stipend and a full tuition waiver for 24 months.  Funds are also
available to cover travel during field trips.  SIUE is situated on a beautiful
2,600 acre campus and is only 20 minutes from downtown St. Louis.

Graduate research assistantship

Starting fall semester 2012. The project involves cutting edge application of ground-penetrating radar to quantify root biomass and spatial distribution. The research will be conducted at the Blackwater Ecologic Preserve in Virginia and at two sites in Florida (Kennedy Space Center and the Disney Wilderness Preserve). A doctoral student is preferred but a master’s student will be considered. Applicants should have strong data management and computer skills as well as a solid background in plant ecology. Successful applicants would develop their master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation around the research. The financial aid package is $22,000 per year plus full tuition waiver for a doctoral student. Coastal Science Assistantship Program

The Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) continues its support of a graduate assistantship opportunity called the Coastal Science Assistantship Program (CSAP).  This program provides graduate assistant salaries for three years to Master of Science students both enrolled full-time at Louisiana colleges/universities and involved in research relevant to Louisiana coastal protection and restoration efforts (see: THE MASTER PLAN - Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority of Louisiana).  The program will both expose students to CPRA activities and provide a potential avenue for recruitment of new CPRA personnel.

The Louisiana Sea Grant (LSG) College Program will administer these assistantships with funding provided by CPRA.  The assistantships will be available to all faculty pursuing appropriate coastal protection and restoration-related research at Louisiana colleges/universities to recruit new, outstanding graduate students.  Up to four new students will be funded each academic year based on evaluations of applications submitted by faculty members.  The annual student salary is $25,000 for three years; however, CSAP funds may also be used to defray costs for graduate assistant benefits and graduate assistant tuition as necessary under the policies and procedures of the various institutions.  The total award (salary plus benefits) will not exceed $25,000 per year for up to three years under any circumstances.  CSAP funds may not be expended on travel, supplies, equipment, or other such budget items.

EnvironMentors coordinator position

Graduate Assistantship for the LSU EnvironMentors Coordinator
Part-time/20 hours per week

Description of the Program:
EnvironMentors is a college access program sponsored by the National Council for Science and the Environment that prepares high school students from under-represented backgrounds for degree programs in environmental and other science-related fields. The LSU Chapter of EnvironMentors (LSU-EM) matches students from Scotlandville Magnet High School with LSU faculty, graduate and undergraduate students in mentoring relationships. Student-mentor pairs develop rigorous environmental science research projects over the course of the academic year and present the projects at a chapter science fair in the spring. The top 3 winners of the local science fair are eligible to compete at the national science fair in May.

LSU-EM http://www.sce.lsu.edu/environmentors is affiliated with the School of the Coast and Environment (SC&E) and partners with the LSU Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR-UP) for logistical support. The LSU-EM assistantship is sponsored by Louisiana Sea Grant.

Description of Position:
The assistantship will provide financial support for a Coordinator of LSU-EM for a minimum of one year while he/she is enrolled in the Masters of Natural Science (MNS) Program. The MNS degree, administered through the Graduate School in conjunction with the College of Science, provides the depth, as well as the breadth, of study in the sciences that is required of science professionals and school teachers. The EnvironMentors Coordinators are critical to the overall success of the program. Some of the main responsibilities of the Coordinators are to: recruit mentors; communicate with mentors and mentees; plan activities, workshops, and field trips that are STEM-related (science, technology, engineering, and math) or focus on college access; provide guidance for the research projects; and plan the local science fair.  Other responsibilities include: participate in webinars and conference calls hosted by EnvironMentors National; make use of the EnvironMentors Online Community; and submit all Chapter Reports by designated due dates.

Required Qualifications:
The candidate should (1) be eligible to enroll in the Masters of Natural Science Program; (2) exhibit strong organizational as well as verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills; (3) demonstrate an understanding of the issues and needs of student populations who are under-represented in the sciences; (4) demonstrate an interest in environmental or STEM education for high school students.

Preferred Qualifications:
1-2 years working experience with at-risk student populations and some college coursework in the natural sciences.

Salary:
$16,000 per academic year

LSU PhD assistantships

Beginning Fall 2012, research assistantships are available for students interested in pursuing Ph.D. degrees in LSU’s multi-disciplinary Donald W. Clayton Graduate Program in Engineering Science. Financial support includes a tuition waiver (including non-resident waiver) and stipend for up to four years contingent on satisfactory academic and research performance. Students should have a strong analytical background and a desire to conduct hurricane-related research. At a minimum, students must possess a bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, geography or related field.
Funding opportunities are available for students interested in pursuing hurricane-related research, including computational and statistical analysis of hurricane damage data, building damage visualization, remote sensing damage assessment, and hurricane damage modeling.
The Donald W. Clayton Graduate Program in Engineering Science allows students to pursue graduate study and research in interdisciplinary areas that cross two or more disciplines in different departments or in program areas not currently associated with existing departments. This interdisciplinary program spans the fields of engineering, science, business, and even law. The college accepts qualified students with bachelor's or master's degrees in engineering or a pure or applied science to work toward a Ph.D. in this interdisciplinary program.
