Research associate Louisiana Sea Grant

The Louisiana Sea Grant College Program is seeking an extension associate to assist with development of Louisiana Direct, a new internet based coast wide direct seafood marketing program. This position will be under the direction of the Louisiana Direct state coordinator and will assist closely with day to day program planning, development, management and evaluation. Position will be housed at the Twin Parish Port Commission office in Delcambre, LA.

GOMF-NOAA Community-based Restoration ProgramFunding Opportunity

The Gulf of Mexico Community-based Restoration Partnership (GCRP) with NOAA's Restoration Center has released the 2011 RFP to fund on-the-ground projects to restore marine, estuarine, and riparian habitats to benefit living marine resources and to provide educational and social benefits by significantly involving the community.

Due date for the proposal is September 15, 2011.  Project funding levels typically fall within the range of $50,000 - $100,000.  I know many of you already have good project ideas and I'd like to encourage you to put a proposal together for this funding round.

Science Director, Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana

Science Director Job Description

The Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana (CRCL) is currently seeking a applications for the position of Science Director.  The Science Director is responsible for providing a clear understanding and unbiased interpretation of the latest scientific and technical information for use by CRCL.  The Science Director must be a motivated, broad-thinking scientist who has the ability to engage scientists and engineers in a broad range of expertise, such as hydrology, ecology, modeling, engineering, geology, etc.  The Science Director is also responsible for collaboration between science and technical expertise and policy makers. 

The Science Director reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for providing the Executive Director and other staff with accurate and reliable scientific and technical information, to help establish CRCL advocacy positions.

Qualifications:

• Minimum of master’s degree, preferably in an ecological or engineering field, and/or five years of experience in scientific research, coastal restoration, or other relevant field.  A doctorate’s degree is preferred. 
• Must have a knowledge of scientific and engineering principles and statistics
• Knowledge of coastal restoration planning and programs (CWPPRA, Coast2050, LCA, State Master Plan, LaCPR, CIAP)
• Knowledge of regulatory programs (NEPA, Section 404 of CWA, Coastal Use Permits, etc)
• Must be able to develop raw data, synthesize information, draw conclusions and communicate scientific findings for public consumption.
• Excellent people skills, written and verbal communication.

Duties:

• Assist the Executive Director and partner organizations with policy issues and legislative affairs by providing scientific information and data as requested.
• Participate, critique and comment on coastal planning and implementation initiatives by the State of Louisiana, federal agencies and local governments
• Monitor regulatory programs and NEPA compliance for important coastal projects and large-scale wetland impacts
• Develop avenues and events to facilitate the exchange of information and work with CRCL staff to plan workshops and conferences.
• Develop relationship with leading experts to provide facts and expert opinions when needed

·         Collaborate with scientists and universities to facilitate the development of science and technology and incorporate into the planning and implementation of projects

• Work with CRCL staff and Board of Directors to incorporate the latest science and technology into position papers and communicate this information to the public

·         Developing restoration or science-based proposals and applying for funding and grants
·         Conduct scientific research on specific topics affecting the coast, as needed or requested by the Executive Director
·         Work with partners to incorporate the latest science and technology into the planning process
·         Developing reports and presentations

• Recruit, train and manage science interns

Overview

This one-day workshop features science based, technical information and research results related to the design and performance of stormwater treatment systems. It was developed for engineers and other professionals involved in the development or review of stormwater treatment designs, such as individuals from private consulting firms, public works departments, and planning offices.

Workshop Goal

Improve your ability to choose the stormwater treatment system or combination of systems that can achieve water quality targets in compliance with current and impending regulations, while at the same time effectively matching peak flows and reducing runoff volume.

What You'll Learn

Participation in this workshop will help you to....

aUnderstand the latest stormwater treatment system performance data from the University of New Hampshire Stormwater Center;

aUse this information to overcome technical barriers to effective design;

aUse understanding of system performance to address both water quality and quantity;

aCritique existing stormwater site designs for their ability to maximize performance.

You will explore how differences in the design and function of stormwater treatment systems can impact their ability to meet common engineering targets for stormwater management. The efficacy of connecting systems in treatment trains for targeted pollutant removal will be covered. You will have a chance to apply what you learn about system design and performance as you critically assess three professional site designs.

Cost

The workshop fee is $150.00 and includes all course materials and lunch.

Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Task Force meeting

On Tuesday, August 30, 2011, the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Task
Force will hold a meeting in Biloxi, MS. The meeting will further the
task force’s ongoing commitment to supporting the conservation and
restoration of resilient and healthy ecosystems in the Gulf of Mexico.
It will be held at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum & Convention Center
from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CT and is open to the public.

On October 5, 2010, President Obama issued Executive Order 13554 to
create the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Task Force, continuing the
administration's ongoing commitment to the Gulf region. The task force
works to integrate federal restoration efforts with those of local
stakeholders and state and tribal governments, and to facilitate

S.C. SEA GRANT EXTENSION COASTAL PROCESSES SPECIALIST

The Coastal Carolina University Burroughs & Chapin Center for Marine and Wetland and Wetland Studies and the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium are seeking a highly qualified individual to serve as their Coastal Processes Extension Specialist, a joint position headquartered on the campus of Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina.

Responsibilities

The S.C. Sea Grant Coastal Processes Extension Specialist will design, plan and implement extension education programs for coastal communities on topics including coastal erosion, sand resources, storm surge, sea level rise, rip currents, coastal and marine spatial mapping, off-shore energy development, and other non-living coastal and marine resources management issues.

The Coastal Processes Extension Specialist will also collaborate with Burroughs & Chapin Center for Marine and Wetland Studies faculty on community-focused research related to the issues above. The specialist will translate and extend the results of this research for the use of non-scientists in decision making processes.

Specific Duties

• Design, plan, implement and evaluate Extension programming on topics as listed above.
• Assess the needs of client groups and develops solutions.
• Work with research faculty at BCCMWS and other Consortium institutions to develop and implement interdisciplinary community-focused research and extension projects.
• Plan, promote and conduct seminars, workshops and meetings.
• Give formal and informal presentations to business and community groups, and at conferences and workshops.
• Develop grant proposals to fund applied research and extension projects.
• Prepare and submit performance reports, statistical analyses and financial data.
• Travel throughout the S.C. coastal zone to meet and interact with client groups.
• Work as a member of the S.C. Sea Grant Extension Program team, performing team and other related duties as required.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a Master of Science or equivalent in Coastal Engineering, Coastal Geology, Geological or Physical Oceanography, or related field. Strong computer and communication skills (written and oral) required. Community-focused research and/or Extension experience preferred. Must possess working, technical and practical knowledge of coastal erosion, storm surge, sea level rise, rip currents, coastal and marine spatial mapping, off-shore energy development, and/or other non-living coastal and marine resources management issues.

• High level of analytical, organizational and planning skills;
• Ability to work independently, and as a part of a team;
• Ability to interpret research-based information for non-science audiences;
• Effective oral and written communication skills; and

Reporting

The Coastal Processes Extension Specialist is employed by Coastal Carolina University, and reports to the Director of the Center for Marine and Wetland Studies and to the Sea Grant Extension Program Leader. Annual plans of work and formal job evaluations are developed and conducted jointly.
