Paid/Full-Time Summer Internships

The environmental agency for the state of Texas is currently accepting applications for the 2014 Mickey Leland Environmental Internship Program (MLEIP). Undergraduate and graduate students majoring in natural and physical science, environmental science/studies, engineering, public health, computer science, business, accounting, finance, pub-lic administration, and law are encouraged to apply. Interns have the opportunity for hands-on learning and professional development in protecting the environment. Employers value the experience, skills and knowledge students gain from completing an internship while at-tending college. Most MLEIP interns are assigned to TCEQ; however private companies, other state agencies, and non-profits also request interns from the program. All internship assignments are in Texas. Hundreds of students apply every year for this valuable opportunity.

Qualifications

Am I Eligible?

 Must be either an Undergraduate Student with 60+ Semester Hours or a Graduate Student

 Requires full-time enrollment for the Spring 2014 semester.

 Requires a minimum of a 2.0/4.0 GPA during the submission of the application

 Must be eligible to work in the U.S.

This innovative Research Experience for Undergraduates Program takes place in 3 locations:

    • On the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa reservation near Cloquet, MN
    • At Salish Kootenai College in Pablo, Montana
    • At St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, University of Minnesota, in Minneapolis, Minnesota

This REU introduces undergraduate students to interdisciplinary research on sustainable land and water resources that is essential for improving management practices. Students will work on one of three teams using an interdisciplinary team-oriented approach that emphasizes quantitative and predictive methods. Student projects will integrate the Earth-surface dynamics, geology, ecology, limnology and paleolimnology, and hydrology principles and techniques required for sustainable land and water management and restoration.


Teams: St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, University of Minnesota : Stream restoration-related experimental work; Salish Kootenai College , Montana: Effects of surface water management practice on groundwater resources; Fond du Lac Reservation in northern Minnesota: Paleolimnology and current habitat conditions of wild rice lakes. An All-Team Gathering at the conclusion of the program will bring all teams together to celebrate their summer research in a research symposium, with talking circles to discuss research in a community context, and hands-on experiments in St. Anthony Falls Laboratory facilities.

LUMCON field courses, summer 2014

The Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON) will be offering the following field courses for the Summer of 2014:

Coastal Landscape Photography (any level)

Introduction to Marine Science (sophomores)
Coral Reef Ecology (juniors, seniors and grad students)
Marine Field Ecology (juniors, seniors and grad students)
Coastal Field Geology (juniors seniors and grad students) 

Our application deadline is April 1st.  I have heard from a few universities that this is a much earlier date than summer registration on campus.  Students can apply with us for our classes before registering for a course on campus.  The deadline is early for LUMCON courses due to the logistics involved with preparing for each field class.  If a course has at least 6 students signed-up by April 1st, we keep registration open for that class until it fills up.  If we do not have at least 6 students for a class by April 1st, the class is cancelled for the summer.  More information and applications can be found at http://www.lumcon.edu/education/university/summer.  I have attached a poster for the summer program.

Title:                          Wildlife Ecology and Shooting Sports Instructor / Counselor

Work Dates:           May 25^th-August 10^th 2014

Location:                 Camp Bob Cooper, Summerton, South Carolina

Description:

The camp is located on YLI’s Camp Bob Cooper directly on Lake Marion (South Carolina’s largest lake).  A majority of the camp week will focus on hunting techniques, wildlife ecology, ATV riding, outdoor survival skills, shotgun training, rifle training, and archery training.  Instructors will be trained and certified in these areas.  In addition to these activities we will also utilize other components such as swimming, teams courses, night hikes and sporting clays. Principle Duties:

·       Teach components of the Wildlife Ecology and Shooting Sports curriculum (training provided).

·       Lead students in daily program classes and activities (wake-up, meals, canteen, campfire, and wrap-up).

·       Be actively involved in all program activities, leading and participating in evening recreational and instructional times as scheduled.

·       Perform direct supervision of children while involved in classes and activities.

·       Perform camp counselor duties including staying and attending to campers over night while they are at camp.

Qualifications:

·       BA or BS in Biology, Wildlife and Fisheries, Natural Resources, or related field is preferred –juniors, seniors, and Graduates should apply.

·       Experience with hunting and shooting sports preferred but not necessary (we will train those without experience).

·       Residential camp experience preferred.

·       Must have the patience, understanding, flexibility, and energy to work and live with campers and staff.

·       Must be willing to sacrifice, adapt, and work hard as part of a team.

Salary:

$440 - $550 twice a month plus room and board and a sickness/accidental insurance plan.
