The Rockefeller State Wildlife Scholarship

The Rockefeller State Wildlife Scholarship is a competitive scholarship that awards $2000 annually for an undergraduate student and $3,000 annually to a graduate student pursuing a degree in forestry, wildlife or marine science at a Louisiana Public College or University. The cumulative maximum award is $12,000 for up to three years of undergraduate study and two years of graduate study.

Be a Louisiana resident for at least one year prior to July 1st of the scholarship award year

Be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in a Louisiana Public College or University majoring in forestry, wildlife or marine science with the intent of obtaining a degree in that field.

Undergraduate students must have earned at least 60 hours of college credit and have at least a 2.50 cumulative college GPA.

As a graduate student have at least a 3.00 cumulative college GPA on all credits earned in graduate school.

Interdisciplinary Communities and Forests in Oregon (CAFOR) Project for graduate students

University of New Hampshire, Durham.

A PhD or MS position available beginning fall 2014 in the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment (www.nre.unh.edu/ ) and the Earth Systems Research Center ( www.esrc.sr.unh.edu ) with two years of funding guaranteed to develop a dissertation/thesis related to the CAFOR project (see below for project description). The position involves the characterization forest biometric properties using field data and remotely sensed image data. The remote sensing platforms will include unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), airplane, and satellite sensors. Extensive field work is a requirement of the position.

The successful applicant will need to work closely with the University of Colorado research team and with researchers from the Carsey Institute ( www.carseyinstitute.unh.edu ) in support of an interdisciplinary research effort. The successful applicant will have a BS in forestry, environmental science, or a closely related field. Desirable skills include programming, GIS, understanding of remote sensing analysis techniques, and statistics, along with previous experience conducting fieldwork.

The successful applicant will have a strong interest in human-environment interactions and have experience with GIS and statistical analysis. The applicant must be willing to spend up to three months in the summer 2015 in eastern Oregon conducting field work. Undergraduate research or other relevant experience is preferred. Applicants should be highly motivated, organized, willing to travel, willing to engage with local stakeholders, and able to work both independently as well as within a team.

Experience the exciting and spellbinding world of crime scene investigations through CSI: Clemson Student Investigators held at YLI Headquarters and Education Center in Pickens, SC. Students perform hair, fiber and soil analysis, pH tests, handwriting analysis, paper chromatography, fingerprinting, footprint casting and more!

Exploration Hannon teaches students how to determine if a new plot of land is acceptable for human life. From hiking to stream mapping, this program uses exciting activities to enable children to learn by participating in hands-on activities. Exploration Hannon takes you through an experience that will last you a lifetime.

Principle Duties:

·       Regularly teach at least two curriculum components in the program

·       Develop and teach at least one elective component relating to some environmental issue or personal interest.

·       Be actively involved in all program activities, leading and participating in evening recreational and instructional times as scheduled.

·       Perform direct supervision of children while involved with activities.

·       Facilitate groups utilizing adventure activities.

Qualifications:

·       BA or BS in Environmental Education, Natural Sciences, Forestry, Geology, Education, Marine Biology or related field is preferred.

·       Must have the patience, understanding, flexibility, and a lot of energy.

4-H Leadership Center in Summerton, SC where we teach our Teaching KATE (natural resources), E-Tech and LEAD programs.

Teaching Kids About The Environment (KATE) features academically based, hands-on exploration of forestry, soils, water ecology, and wildlife resources. Developed by YLI and the coalition for Natural Resources, the program is endorsed by the S.C. Department of Education. Teaching KATE is held at Camp Bob Cooper located in Summerton, SC.

The Leadership Education through Adventure and Discovery (LEAD) program combines experiential science and natural resources studies with adventure and leadership activities. Customized team-building activities include climbing, zip lining, canoeing and hiking. LEAD is held at Camp Bob Cooper located in Summerton, SC.

E-TECH combines environmental science with technology as students learn about soil, water, birding and forestry and then use digital cameras, global positioning systems, computers and various software applications to research and demonstrate what they’ve learned. E-TECH is held at Camp Bob Cooper located in Summerton, SC.

Each spring, rowing teams and their coaches travel across the United States to train at R.M. Cooper Leadership center for Spring Crew Training. With Camp Bob Cooper’s relaxing setting and athletic equipment, crew team members, as well as their coaches are able to go through training successfully, without any distractions. Instructors will work with teams during their stay at Camp Bob Cooper taking care of programming needs, facility needs, and other necessary tasks.

·       Lead students in daily program activities (wake-up, flagpole, meals, canteen, and campfire).

·       Be actively involved in all program activities, leading and participating in evening recreational and instructional times as scheduled.

·       Perform direct supervision of children while involved with activities.
