Title: Outdoor Education Instructor/Naturalist
Work Dates: January 2013 – May 2013 (summer opportunities available)
Location: Pickens, SC & Sunset, SC

Description:
The programs combine a unique opportunity to work in varied curriculums and educate children in forensic sciences and forestry/mountain ecology. The name of the sites we will be hiring the instructor to work at include the Youth Learning Institute’s Headquarters in Pickens, SC and Camp Hannon located in Sunset, SC.

Experience the exciting and spellbinding world of crime scene investigations through CSI: Clemson Student Investigators held at YLI Headquarters and Education Center in Pickens, SC. Designed for fourth through eighth grade students, CSI brings an incredible learning adventure where students become forensic investigators, solving mysteries with math, forensic science and technology. Students perform hair, fiber and soil analysis, pH tests, handwriting analysis, paper chromatography, fingerprinting, footprint casting and more!
Head out on an adventure and experience nature’s beauty and excitement, while educating children at Camp Hannon! Exploration Hannon teaches students how to determine if a new plot of land is acceptable for human life. From hiking to stream mapping, this program uses exciting activities to enable children to learn by participating in hands-on activities. Exploration Hannon takes you through an experience that will last you a lifetime.

Principle Duties:
  • Regularly teach at least two curriculum components in the program
  • Develop and teach at least one elective component relating to some environmental issue or personal interest.
  • Be actively involved in all program activities, leading and participating in evening recreational and instructional times as scheduled.
  • Perform direct supervision of children while involved with activities.
  • Facilitate groups utilizing adventure activities.

Qualifications:
  • BA or BS in Environmental Education, Natural Sciences, Forestry, Geology, Education, Marine Biology or related field is preferred.
  • Must have the patience, understanding, flexibility, and a lot of energy.
  • Must demonstrate teaching skills and the ability to implement creative “hands on” teaching methods.
  • Must be willing to sacrifice, adapt and work hard as part of a team pursuing an objective.
  • Must be physically able to perform the tasks required to teach outdoors.
  • Must be willing to work long hours.

Pay Scale:
Twice a month pay of $550-$500 plus room, board, and a sickness/accidental insurance plan. EOE.
