The purpose of the DEQ Student Internship program is to employ students at the graduate and undergraduate levels, in fields of study that will be beneficial to the DEQ while providing the students with challenging work experience and exposure to the environmental regulatory processes and the business operations of a governmental entity. Through this program, the DEQ hopes to increase awareness of environmental issues and encourage students to pursue environmental/governmental careers.

Qualifications
In order to be considered for the internship program, students must be: 

- Currently enrolled in an accredited educational institution at the undergraduate or graduate levels. 

- Pursuing an education in a directly related curriculum to the Division that they will be working for (i.e., BS/MS in Biology for OES/Permits, BA in Accounting for Fiscal Services, etc.). 

- Maintain enrollment at the University while employed in the internship program. 

Verification of enrollment from the University will be required upon hire. The verification must be on official University letterhead and include the students name, status (full-time or part-time with the number of hours enrolled), and classification. 

Students do not need to be registered during the summer sessions in order to be qualified for student status. However, if they graduate in the spring semester, proof of enrollment for the fall semester must be received in order to continue employment under the internship program.

Camp Wildlife Job Description

Title: Wildlife Ecology and Shooting Sports Instructor / Counselor
Work Dates: June 3– August 10, 2013
Location: Camp Bob Cooper, Summerton, South Carolina

Description:
The camp is located on YLI’s Camp Bob Cooper directly on Lake Marion (South Carolina’s largest lake). A majority of the camp week will focus on hunting techniques, wildlife ecology, ATV riding, outdoor survival skills, shotgun training, rifle training, and archery training. Instructors will be trained and certified in these areas. In addition to these activities we will also utilize other components such as swimming, teams courses, night hikes and sporting clays. We have partnered with Back Woods Quail Club, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, and South Carolina 4-H Shooting Sports. Principle Duties:
  • Teach components of the Wildlife Ecology and Shooting Sports curriculum (training provided).
  • Lead students in daily program classes and activities (wake-up, meals, canteen, campfire, and wrap-up).
  • Be actively involved in all program activities, leading and participating in evening recreational and instructional times as scheduled.
  • Perform direct supervision of children while involved in classes and activities.
  • Perform camp counselor duties including staying and attending to campers over night while they are at camp.

Qualifications:
  1. BA or BS in Biology, Wildlife and Fisheries, Natural Resources, or related field is preferred –Juniors, Seniors, and Graduates should apply.
  2. Experience with hunting and shooting sports preferred but not necessary (we will train those without experience).
  3. Residential camp experience preferred.
  4. Must have the patience, understanding, flexibility, and energy to work and live with campers and staff.
  5. Must be willing to sacrifice, adapt, and work hard as part of a team.

Salary:
$440 - $550 twice a month plus room and board and a sickness/accidental insurance plan. EOE.

Responsibilities: Under the direction of the San Antonio Bay Ecosystem Leader, this position is responsible for assisting with the collection, recording, and editing of fishery-dependent and independent data in the San Antonio Bay ecosystem. Operates equipment safely and maintains gear, equipment, and facility. May assist with training, assigning and/or scheduling the work of other team members as needed. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures
Working Conditions: (1) Required to work hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays as needed; (2) Required to work overtime as necessary; (3) Required to travel with possible overnight stays; (4) Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions; (5) Required to perform work in water-based field activities, including work aboard seagoing vessels; (6) Required to perform manual labor including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs; (7) Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
  
Minimum Qualifications:

·         Education: Graduation from High School or GED.

·         Preferred Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries Biology, Marine Biology or closely related field.

·         Experience: Fish and Wildlife Technician I: No experience required. Fish and Wildlife Technician II: Four years relevant experience. Acceptable Substitution:Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's, Master’s or PhD degree in Fisheries Biology, Marine Biology or closely related field may be substituted for two years of required experience.

·         Preferred Experience:
1.      Experience working on vessels in the Gulf of Mexico or other large bodies of water.

·         License/Certifications: Must possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days of employment, a valid Class "C" Texas driver's license. NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining license.

The Louisiana Environmental Health Association (LEHA) was conceived in 1947 by six charter members to address environmental issues in the State of Louisiana. LEHA is also a state affiliate of the National Health Association (NEHA).
LEHA’s membership is made up of a varied group of people who study and/or work in environmental protection and public health areas. The group is presently made up of state agencies, industry, military services, and consulting agencies in all areas of environmental management who are dedicated to helping environmental health professionals meet demands of effective control of environmental issues.
Every other year, LEHA hosts a one-day conference to discuss environmental topics. LEHA awards two educational scholarships each year to assist outstanding students in the environmental and health fields. Two $1,000.00 scholarships are awarded, one to an undergraduate and one to a graduate student. LEHA’s scholarship award winners will be presented at this Bi- annual Conference.

MEAT CUTTER
Brookshire Brothers in DeRidder La is currently looking to hire an individual with previous meat-cutting experience.

The first and most important responsibility and accountability is to provide friendly, courteous service to our customers. A meat cutter will receive from the Distribution Center meat in cases to be cut, sliced, sawed or ground into specific "cuts" of meat. He/she will make the "cuts" to be packaged and displayed in the meat case. He/she will also assist in various other activities directed by the general operation of the store as needed, including general cleaning and custodial duties and other specific activities as directed by management.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. A meat cutter must be able to crouch, grasp, lift, pull, push, reach, stand, kneel and walk in order to lift and carry meat cases to table in order to cut, slice, saw and/or grind the meat for purchase. He/she must be able to lift meat cases weighing up to 100 pounds to waist high. The must be able to stand in one place for long periods of time in order to prepare meat in a repetitive manner. The job requires a frequent exertion of a heavy force. Repetitive motion is required with substantial movements of the wrists, hands and/or fingers.

WORK ENVIRONMENT This job requires work in a cold environment involving refrigerated and freezing environments.

SUMMER 2013 OCEAN SCIENCES
RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR UNDERGRADUATES
OVERVIEW
In summer of 2013, Mote Marine Laboratory will host a 10-week, National Science Foundation-funded program focused on providing research experiences in estuarine science to 10 undergraduate students. Students will be paired with Mote scientists and conduct research on major threats to estuaries such as aquatic
pollution, natural toxins, habitat alteration, and coral reef decline. Students will gain experience in science communication by presenting the results of their independent project in a manuscript-style research paper and orally at a laboratory-wide poster presentation. Students will also attend research seminars, workshops on career skills in science, and may have the opportunity to present their research findings at professional conferences. 

ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible for the Mote REU Program, students must be:
• U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. or its territories
• Currently enrolled in a degree program (full-time or part-time) leading to a baccalaureate degree. Students cannot have already graduated at the time of their internship.
• First-time REU participants
• Available for the duration of the program, May 26th-August 3rd (subject to change)

In addition, applicants must:

Possess a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher (on a 4-point scale)
Make efforts to receive academic credit for participation in the REU Program

 - Students from minority groups underrepresented in science are strongly encouraged to apply - 

TRAVEL, STIPEND, & HOUSING
Students participating in the REU program will receive:
• Stipend of $5,000 over the 10-week period
• Housing (paid by Mote)
• Support for transportation between Mote and their home institution
