Scholarship Information & Requirements

1. A minimum of one graduate and one undergraduate scholarship will be awarded in 2013.
   
2. Preference is given to applicants currently enrolled at a Louisiana institution. Exceptions may be considered under special circumstances.
   
3. Scholarships will be awarded to students majoring in one of the following fields: Entomology, Plant Pathology, Weed Science, Botany, Microbiology, Biology, Agronomy, Plant Science, Horticulture, Agribusiness, and Vocational Agriculture.
   
4. Each scholarship will be a minimum of $2,000.00.
   
5. The deadline for applying is January 10, 2013.
   
6. A student can receive an LACA scholarship only once.
   
7. An official university transcript(s) from all institutions is required.
   
8. Two letters of recommendation are required.
   
9. Winners are invited and encouraged to attend the Louisiana Agricultural Technology & Management Conference on February 13-15, 2013. The scholarships will be awarded the Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 13th during the General Session.
   
10. Qualifications:
    
    1. Applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or above.
       
    2. Full time UNDERGRADUATE or GRADUATE students at an accredited Louisiana academic institution are preferred. However, applicants, who are part time because of special situations or following an approved curriculum on-line at an accredited university, will be given serious consideration.
       
    3. Undergraduate students must have completed a minimum of 45 semester hours or its equivalent prior to application.
       
    4. Graduate students must have selected a major professor and must be engaged in his/her research project.
       

5. Applicants must submit an OFFICIAL university transcript(s) from each academic institution attended, and these must be received before the application deadline. The transcript can be mailed, shipped or sent electronically by the university directly to the scholarship chairperson. Transcripts may be sent by students but they must be an official copy with the university seal.
   
6. Each applicant must submit an essay stating why he or she feels qualified to receive a scholarship.
   
   1. The essay must be a minimum of 200 words.
      
   2. In the essay, the student should demonstrate their writing and communication skills.
      
7. Two current letters of recommendation must be submitted prior to the application deadline.
   
   1. One letter must be written by a professor in an ag related field.
      
   2. The individuals writing letters of recommendation must mail these directly to the chairperson of the scholarship committee.
      
8. Work experience in agriculture is highly desirable.
   
9. Extracurricular activities are desirable.

Internship Responsibilities

Conditions

·         R & D internship candidates must have completed their Sophomore or Junior year of college

·         This is a temporary full-time position.  The hours of work are 8:00am-5:00pm Monday through Friday for the months of June, July and August (approximately 12 weeks)

Internships include safety orientation and training, laboratory work and guidance from a senior scientist on an actual industrial research project related to Sasol’s products and technology and critical analysis of results.

Deepwater Draft Early Restoration Plan and Environmental Review

Credit: Scott Nicol The Deepwater Horizon trustees have released the Phase II Draft Early Restoration Plan & Environmental Review (DERP/ER) for public review and comment. The plan includes two proposed projects totaling about $9 million that focus on restoring nesting habitat for birds and sea turtles. Response efforts resulting from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill caused injuries to this natural habitat. "This draft plan includes two Early Restoration projects which represent a near-term opportunity to improve the nesting habitats of birds and turtles, two species that are integral to the Gulf Coast wildlife community," said Cynthia Dohner, Natural Resource Trustee for the Department of the Interior. "Our desire is to provide these benefits during the next nesting season, but we'd first like to hear from the public. We encourage the public to attend the November 13 meeting in Pensacola and to give us their comments." The DERP/ER describes the second round of projects proposed to receive funding from the $1 billion BP committed to Early Restoration on April 21, 2011. The trustees will hold a public meeting on November 13, 2012 to solicit comment on the plan. The meeting will be held at the Escambia County Central Complex Building in Room 104, 3363 West Park Place Pensacola, Fla. 32505. There will be an open house from 6:00-7:00 PM followed by the meeting and public comment period from 7:00-9:00 PM. The DERP/ER describes two proposed projects for the second round of Early Restoration. These projects address coastal conservation for the purpose of restoring bird (avian) and sea turtle nesting habitats, which were injured by oil spill response operations. These projects are timed to enhance the bird and turtle nesting ground as the spring 2013 nesting season begins. Below is a brief description of each project: A Comprehensive Program for Enhanced Management of Avian Breeding Habitat Injuries by Response in the Florida Panhandle, Alabama and Mississippi. This project proposes to protect nesting habitat for beach-nesting birds from disturbance in order to restore habitat impaired by disturbance from oil spill response activities. It is to be conducted on sandy beaches in Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, Bay, Gulf, and Franklin counties, Florida; Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in Baldwin and Mobile counties, Alabama, and the Gulf Islands National Seashore (GUIS) - Mississippi District. Improving Habitat Injured by Spill Response: Restoring the Night Sky. This project proposes to reduce artificial lighting impacts on nesting habitat for sea turtles, specifically loggerhead turtles, to restore habitat impaired by disturbance from oil spill response activities. It is to be conducted on sandy beach public properties in Baldwin County, Alabama; and Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, Bay, Gulf, and Franklin counties, Florida. The programs combine a unique opportunity to work in varied curriculums and educate children in forensic sciences and forestry/mountain ecology. The name of the sites we will be hiring the instructor to work at include the Youth Learning Institute’s Headquarters in Pickens, SC and Camp Hannon located in Sunset, SC.

Experience the exciting and spellbinding world of crime scene investigations through CSI: Clemson Student Investigators held at YLI Headquarters and Education Center in Pickens, SC. Designed for fourth through eighth grade students, CSI brings an incredible learning adventure where students become forensic investigators, solving mysteries with math, forensic science and technology. Students perform hair, fiber and soil analysis, pH tests, handwriting analysis, paper chromatography, fingerprinting, footprint casting and more!

Head out on an adventure and experience nature’s beauty and excitement, while educating children at Camp Hannon! Exploration Hannon teaches students how to determine if a new plot of land is acceptable for human life. From hiking to stream mapping, this program uses exciting activities to enable children to learn by participating in hands-on activities. Exploration Hannon takes you through an experience that will last you a lifetime.

Principle Duties:

• Regularly teach at least two curriculum components in the program
• Develop and teach at least one elective component relating to some environmental issue or personal interest.
• Be actively involved in all program activities, leading and participating in evening recreational and instructional times as scheduled.
• Perform direct supervision of children while involved with activities.
• Facilitate groups utilizing adventure activities.

Qualifications:

• BA or BS in Environmental Education, Natural Sciences, Forestry, Geology, Education, Marine Biology or related field is preferred.
• Must have the patience, understanding, flexibility, and a lot of energy.
• Must demonstrate teaching skills and the ability to implement creative “hands on” teaching methods.
• Must be willing to sacrifice, adapt and work hard as part of a team pursuing an objective.
• Must be physically able to perform the tasks required to teach outdoors.
• Must be willing to work long hours.

Pay Scale:

Twice a month pay of $550-$500 plus room, board, and a sickness/accidental insurance plan. EOE.

Graduate program, Earth System Science and Policy, U. of North Dakota

Positions are open for graduate students seeking a Master of Science or Ph.D. Degrees in Earth System Science and Policy at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, ND with research interests in environmental change and impacts related to climate change and water resources using remote sensing and GIS techniques combined with field work.
The primary area of research involves studying changes in North American glaciers and how these changes relate to climate fluctuations, as well as the impacts on downstream water use. This study involves the use of remote sensing and GIS techniques in which ENVI remote sensing and ESRI GIS software will be utilized in analyzing ASTER and Landsat images, Aerial Photography, and Digital Elevation Models. Knowledge of either software and/or the above data types is desirable, but not necessary. Field work is likely to occur during the late summer months and some experience in wilderness travel is desired but also not necessary. Field work will consist of using high accuracy GPS, laser range finder, ice penetrating radar, stream flow meter, and meteorological equipment. These topics can be tailored to fit a M.S. or Ph.D. degree. Tuition waivers are available and funding in the form of Research Assistantships may be available in the future. Students from a wide range of fields are encouraged to apply, such as Geography, Geology, Environmental Science, Climatology, Hydrology as well as many others in environmental majors.
