Annual LSHR Scholarship Information

The Louisiana Society for Horticultural Research annually gives two scholarships to one graduate student and one undergraduate student. Details of scholarships are attached. Deadline is Feb 1st of 2011 for the academic year- fall of 2011 and spring 2012. The LSHR board meets after Feb 1 to make scholarship selections.

Wildlife Biologist

Position Title: Natural Resource Specialist I / Wildlife Biologist

Job Location: Victoria, TX

Responsibilities: Under the direction of the District 7 Leader, the Wildlife Biologist performs professional planning, management, and research duties associated with wildlife and habitat resources in Victoria, Calhoun, and Refugio Counties within Coastal Prairie regions of the Oak Prairie District. With guidance and review from the Senior Wildlife Biologist, this position plans and conducts biological inspections, surveys, and studies; evaluates results or environmental impacts with regard to wildlife resources and their habitats; and prepares technical reports and recommendations regarding findings. Provides technical assistance and public outreach programs to the general public, landowners/land managers, sportsmen, and new constituencies. Assists with Public Lands short term leasing programs as assigned. Performs administrative duties. Works under moderate to general supervision with limited to moderate latitude, depending on experience and education level, for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division, and branch rules, regulations, and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

The mission of the HBBS is to provide research and technical assistance to support fishery management of the Great Lakes through improvement of sea lamprey control. To accomplish this mission, the HBBS focuses on research in three areas: (1) Great Lakes fish communities and the effects of lamprey parasitism and predation, including abundance estimation, population dynamics, and modeling; (2) ecology, behavior, movement, and physiology of lamprey, and (3) the development and testing of sea lamprey control techniques and their transfer to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Department of Fisheries and Oceans (Canada). The researcher has direct responsibility for identifying, proposing, and leading research in promising new areas related to the ecology, dynamics, and assessment of Great Lakes fishes (e.g., lake trout and lake whitefish) as they relate to sea lamprey populations. Regional Resource Coordinator

Duties:

Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA): Addresses oil spills, waste sites, and vessel groundings in the SE region of the U.S.; follows the Oil Pollution Act (OPA), Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), and NRDA regulations to determine natural resource injuries and appropriate scale of restoration; leads or contributes to injury assessment approaches, restoration planning, and development of case strategy; helps develop responses to responsible party settlement proposals; takes appropriate action to integrate remediation and restoration activities with natural resource trustee agencies and Responsible Parties during the NRDA process; contributes to settlements that address natural resource injuries/liability with a

multi- disciplinary team of individuals, including biologists, chemists, policy analysts, economists, and/or attorneys.

All-Hazards Preparedness, Response, and Assessment: Supports OR&R’s 24-7 capacity to prepare for and respond to natural disasters, emergency events, or other sources of natural resource injuries in the coastal zone; facilitates improved communication during emergencies at local, state, regional, and federal levels; functions within FEMA’s Emergency Support Functions and the Incident Command System (ICS) after emergencies; leverages knowledge of offshore and nearshore infrastructure, community and ecological/habitat resilience, and climate change issues in SE region to improve OR&R’s emergency preparedness, response, assessment, marine debris, and restoration activities; contributes to OR&R’s coordination of scientific data, observations, predictions, and response activities for all emergencies threatening life, commerce, or the environment.

Support Delivery of ARD Products and Services: Integrates with existing geospatial and data management capabilities within ARD to meet existing and future program goals and objectives; contributes to new approaches and applications to support emerging ARD, DARRP, and OR&R spatial needs.

Qualifications:

Description:

The Cumberland HCP Science Advisory Committee (SAC) is working with multiple stakeholders to support development of two multi-species Habitat Conservation Plans (HCP) in the northern Cumberland Plateau region of Tennessee (see www.cumberlandhcp.org). One HCP is nearing submission to the USFWS for review and approval and covers forest management on state-owned Wildlife Management Areas. The other HCP will cover commercial and residential development and associated activities in three counties and associated municipalities and is in the early stages of development. The SAC is responsible for providing scientific support for both HCPs through research and scientific guidance. Major goals for the SAC are providing the biological goals and objectives, take calculations, adaptive management and monitoring strategies, and other support for the species proposed for inclusion in the HCPs. The SAC collaborates with multiple working groups including academic scientists; local-, state- and federal-agency personnel; and other technical experts to meet these goals. The SAC also coordinates draft approaches and results with outreach staff and decision-making bodies.

The Science Coordinator will provide four main services: 1) oversight and guidance to all scientific aspects of the HCPs, 2) modeling and statistical guidance to establish a scientifically based conservation program, 3) leadership for SAC staff, and 4) supervision and publication of research activities pertinent to the development of both HCPs.

Qualifications: The Science Coordinator will ideally have a Ph.D. in Ecology, Wildlife Sciences, Conservation Biology or related field and extensive experience in designing and implementing large-scale conservation programs. The ideal candidate will have experience in strategic planning, decision analysis, fish/wildlife population or habitat modeling, quantitative conservation ecology, population ecology, and a scientific publication record. The ideal candidate will additionally have familiarity with southern Appalachian ecosystems, drafting/review of HCPs, stakeholder-relationship building, providing statistical guidance to establish a scientifically based conservation program, as well as planning and facilitating meetings. This is a significant opportunity for an early- to mid-career scientist to develop applied conservation science skills that can be critically important in future endeavors.

Salary and Benefits: Annual salary is $60,000.00 from start date through June 30, 2011 and is renewable for two additional years based on performance and receipt of external funding (high degree of certainty). A generous benefits package includes the accumulation of two vacation days per month and one sick leave day per month, and thirteen University holidays annually. Duties: As Fishery Management Plan Coordinator, the incumbent is responsible for development and coordination of ASMFC fishery management plans. The incumbent is required to organize stock assessment workshops, technical & advisory committee meetings, and management board meetings; foster management consensus building; integrate workshop, committee findings and board decisions into management planning; report writing and information dissemination. This position requires working under tight timelines integrating a number of complex and controversial issues at one time.
