Description: Provide research leadership for a vibrant, innovative group of ecologists investigating the community ecology of the Great Lakes, the effects of sea lamprey predation, and the development of novel techniques for lamprey control. The mission of the HBBS is to provide research and technical assistance to support fishery management of the Great Lakes through improvement of sea lamprey control. To accomplish this mission, the HBBS focuses on research in three areas: (1) Great Lakes fish communities and the effects of lamprey parasitism and predation, including abundance estimation, population dynamics, and modeling; (2) ecology, behavior, movement, and physiology of lamprey, and (3) the development and testing of sea lamprey control techniques and their transfer to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Department of Fisheries and Oceans (Canada). The researcher has direct responsibility for identifying, proposing, and leading research in promising new areas related to the ecology, dynamics, and assessment of Great Lakes fishes (e.g., lake trout and lake whitefish) as they relate to sea lamprey populations. Supervision includes three research ecologists, several technicians, and other support staff. Facilities include offices, chemical and wet laboratories, and extensive field equipment.
