Wildlife Biologist

Position Title: Natural Resource Specialist I / Wildlife Biologist

Agency: Wildlife Division, Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD)

Job Location: Victoria, TX

Responsibilities: Under the direction of the District 7 Leader, the Wildlife Biologist performs professional planning, management, and research duties associated with wildlife and habitat resources in Victoria, Calhoun, and Refugio Counties within Coastal Prairie regions of the Oak Prairie District. With guidance and review from the Senior Wildlife Biologist, this position plans and conducts biological inspections, surveys, and studies; evaluates results or environmental impacts with regard to wildlife resources and their habitats; and prepares technical reports and recommendations regarding findings. Provides technical assistance and public outreach programs to the general public, landowners/land managers, sportsmen, and new constituencies. Assists with Public Lands short term leasing programs as assigned. Performs administrative duties. Works under moderate to general supervision with limited to moderate latitude, depending on experience and education level, for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division, and branch rules, regulations, and procedures.

Working Conditions: (1) Required to work from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday; (2) Required to work on holidays, weekends, and hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. as necessary; (3) Required to travel in-state or out-of-state with possible overnight stays; (4) Required to operate state vehicle; (5) Required to work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions; (6) Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.

Minimum Qualifications:

· Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Management, or related biological field with major coursework, 24 hours minimum, in Wildlife Management.

· Experience: None required. NOTE: Salary will be commensurate with relevant experience or completion of a Master's or PhD degree in Wildlife biology, Wildlife management or related biological field from an accredited college or university. Current TPWD NRS II and III employees may apply for this position at their current classification title and salary. Career Ladder progression is available.

· License/Certifications: Must possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days of employment, a valid Class "C" Texas driver's license. NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining license

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: (1) Knowledge of wildlife species, ecology, and management with particular emphasis relating to private lands; (2) Skill in using personal computers with knowledge of MS Office software including Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint and advanced analytical software applications; (3) Skill in using GIS and GPS hardware and software; (4) Skill in effective verbal and written communication; (5) Skill in collecting scientific data; (6) Skill in coordinating with the public, universities, department personnel, media representatives and other governmental agencies; (7) Skill in working independently, with little or no supervision; (8) Skill in working as a team member; (9) Ability to apply common habitat enhancement techniques; (10) Ability to conduct conservation outreach programs; (11) Ability to analyze scientific data.
