SeaWorld Parks horticulture internships

This spring and summer our SeaWorld Parks in Orlando will be offering horticulture internships to students interested in continuing their learning and education through our internship program. I strongly believe these internships offer students a tremendous opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the landscaping profession. Our parks provide a great environment for interns to combine horticulture skills, educational experiences, and guest service for a once in a lifetime internship experience.

Our competitive, paid internships also provide students with the ability to learn both in our parks and with outside organizations. We encourage our interns to work at achieving professional certifications during their time with us, and also learn from our industry certified professionals through technical training and field trips.

I've attached a flyer with details about applying, qualifications, and other details. I hope that you and your students find this information helpful. Please feel free to contact me with any questions and I look forward to hearing from you in the future.

Director of Marine Extension Louisiana Sea Grant

Louisiana Sea Grant is seeking candidates for the position of Director of Marine Extension (see attached announcement). This is a full time, 12-month professional position that will serve as key member of La Sea Grant’s leadership team. The Director will lead an energetic, motivated team of 15 marine agents and discipline-specific specialists in a diverse and challenging marine extension and outreach program. As part of the upper management of Louisiana Sea Grant, the Director will also have ample opportunity to provide input into the development of new program-wide initiatives and projects.

Since 1968, Louisiana Sea Grant, headquartered on the Louisiana State University campus in Baton Rouge, has addressed the complex and often interrelated ecological, economic and social challenges that affect coastal Louisiana, one of the United States’ most dynamic coastal regions. The magnitude of these persistent – and more recently disruptive – challenges requires a practical and well-defined approach, as well as reliance on partners in an extensive network of state and regional universities, federal and state resource management agencies, and private sector and citizen groups. The scope of Louisiana Sea Grant’s activities embraces four main focus areas, as many as 13 academic institutions, 19 coastal zone parishes, and numerous partners in state and federal agencies and the private sector that provide matching funds and/or opportunities for collaboration. At any given time, Louisiana Sea Grant either manages or participates in more than 70 research, extension, education and communication projects. These include Omnibus awards; other National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)-funded projects; program development projects; other federal, state and privately funded projects; and informal partnerships and collaborations.

The most important extension and outreach challenges that Louisiana Sea Grant will face during the next decade will certainly relate to sustainability of communities and ecosystems in Louisiana’s coastal zone. The 2005 (Katrina and Rita) and 2008 (Gustav and Ike) hurricane seasons, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and the specter of sea level rise have revealed much about the region’s vulnerabilities. Eighty-five percent of Louisiana’s population – Louisiana Sea Grant’s primary constituency – resides in this region, which is also a major locus of strategically important maritime, refining, and petrochemical manufacturing industry.

These are challenging, yet exciting, times for Louisiana Sea Grant and its personnel. The program has dynamic leadership, a strong and dedicated support staff, extensive partnerships and funding sufficient to maintain, and even expand, its efforts to assist the residents and communities of coastal Louisiana. We invite you to give your candidacy every strong consideration.

See attached document for additional information on the position; please contact me if you have either questions or a need for additional information.

Louisiana Sea Grant coastal projects

This is a solicitation from the Louisiana Sea Grant College Program for Statements of Interest proposing two-year coastal research projects. The Statement of Interest serves as a project pre-proposal that identifies a topic relevant to coastal and marine needs in Louisiana and the nation. It describes both the scope of the need, problem, or opportunity and how the results achieved would contribute to development, conservation, or utilization of coastal and marine resources. Statements allow for review of concepts, rationale, general approach, and expected outcomes and impacts before faculty must commit to providing a narrative of detailed methodology, literature review, and other requirements of a full proposal.

1. Priority Focus Areas are: 1) Healthy Coastal Ecosystems, 2) Sustainable Coastal Development, 3) Safe and Sustainable Seafood Supply, and 4) Hazard Resilience in Coastal Communities. We strongly suggest that you access a complete explanation of these priorities and their attendant Goals and Strategies at Louisiana Sea Grant Strategic Plan 2009-2013.

2. Proposals must be strong in scientific and professional merit, rationale and user relationships. Other criteria apply.

3. 50% match is required for all awards.

4. Faculty may participate in a maximum of two Statements of Interest. Listing as Principal Investigator, Co-Principal Investigator, or Associate Investigator counts as participation.

Size of Grant Awards

We will entertain Statements of Interest with maximum budgets of $90,000/year for either one or two year projects. Occasionally projects that are evaluated highly, but fall just below the cutoff for full funding, can be supported at a reduced scope and cost with Program Development funds.

A fully completed and signed Statement of Interest, in either hard copy or PDF format, must be submitted to Ms. Katie Lea (Room 238 Sea Grant Building, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA 70803 or klea@lsu.edu) by 4:00 PM on Friday, 28 January 2011 without exception.

Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship

The John A. Knauss Marine Policy Fellowships Program was established in 1979 to provide a unique educational experience to students who have an interest in marine/ocean/Great Lakes resources and in the national policy decisions affecting those resources. The program is open to all students enrolled in a graduate or professional program in a marine- or aquatic-related field at a U.S.–accredited institution of higher learning. The fellowships, over 50 were awarded for the 2010class, allow students to share their expertise with policy makers in Washington, D.C., and provide a first-hand look at how science is used in the policy arena and how decisions are made. Many Knauss fellows are offered permanent employment by their sponsoring agencies and either remain in the Washington, DC, area or are assigned to offices across the United States.

The stipend for the Fellowship is $38,000 plus an additional $9,000 for moving and travel expenses and mandatory health insurance, and $2,000 for Placement Week expenses.

Louisiana Sea Grant has assisted in sending 19 bright students to DC on Knauss Fellowships. Ms. Lauren Land (LSU School of the Coast and Environment) and Ms. Amy Scaroni (LSU School of Renewable Natural Resources) are current finalists for the Class of 2011.
