Diva Resort Maldives, based on Dhidhoofinolhu Island in South Ari Atoll, has recently created a new Marine Biology department and is looking for an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and guest orientated person to take over the running of this new department. The position will also include an exciting community liaison aspect as part of the
development of the newly declared South Ari atoll Marine Protected Area (MPA).


The Resort Marine Biologist is responsible for educating the guests about the marine life of the Maldives and leading excursions in a fun, safe and informative way. They will also be responsible for ensuring that all Diva’s marine activities adhere to the best environmental practices at all times.

Main Work Duties
1) Guest Education
a) Presentations and videos on marine life, answering guest questions.
Topics may include;
• Whale Sharks
• Corals and Coral Reefs
• Reef Fish in the Maldives
• Dolphins & Whales
• Biodiversity of the Maldives
You will be present at scheduled times of the week to talk to the guests and before some of the activities. This may involve giving pre - prepared Power Point presentations.
b) Involved in regular Whale Shark discovery excursions.
c) Potential for joining guest dives. Working with the dive centre and guide to assist them in their duties and provide information and answer guest questions.
d) Involved in snorkeling excursions. Showing guests marine life in the water, identifying marine life for them, answering guest questions and helping to ensure their safety on the excursion.
e) Lead a weekly activity for Kids Club. Teach the younger guests about marine life with one of a selection of hands on activities.
f) Assist or lead on other activities as needed. Be present around the island to talk to guests, sell your activities and be the ‘face’ of Marine Biology on Diva.

2) The Marine Protected Area Community Liaison Role
a) Assist the community committee of the South Ari MPA
b) Provide a point of contact for the government’s MPA management body, the Environment Protection Agency (EPA)
c) Through consultations with local stakeholders assist the EPA with the development of a site management plan for the South Ari atoll MPA
d) Work directly with other South Ari-based research and conservation groups
e) Conduct MPA related outreach work within the neighbouring local and resort islands

3) Educate and Promote Good Environmental Practices
a) Maintain the Good Practice Procedures set up at Diva
b) Promote good environmental practices by the guests
c) Be on hand to answer guest or media questions relating to how Diva’s marine activities have been developed with environmental awareness in mind


The marine biologist will also be expected to participate in and promote any further environmental or conservation initiatives which Diva Resort Maldives creates and which are not mentioned above.

Conservation Project Manager

National Geographic Education Programs has been working to engage and educate the ocean recreation community with our pilot programs last year in Miami. Florida and Monterey Bay, California. The program provides a half day workshop for 100- 120 ocean recreation providers by convening local marine science experts, communication professionals, Nat Geo explorers, and more to give presentations as well as resources such as books, DVD's, etc..This year one of the locations is the Galveston / Houston Texas area. The marine recreation community is being defined as those working with the public, such as boat captains, crew, scuba instructors and scuba shop owners, dive boat operators, lifeguards, kayak instructors, etc...

Position Description:
This position will be working as a Contractor (Manpower) from their own home on a hourly, part time basis. Hourly rate of compensation is $20.00 an hour and work will range from 5 to max 15 hours a week. Position is needed ASAP due to upcoming planning meeting in Galveston, Texas on June 3rd. The actual workshop is in the fall (late September or early October). This position will begin immediately and will end 2 weeks after the workshop in the fall.

The Zoological Society of London’s (ZSL) Marine & Freshwater Conservation Programme seeks to bring direct and sustained conservation benefits to marine, coastal and freshwater wildlife and their habitats. ZSL is looking to recruit a dynamic individual to act as Project Manager of the Tidal Thames Conservation Project. You will be responsible for developing, implementing, managing and promoting a coherent set of conservation projects that will contribute to the conservation of the Thames Estuary, its wildlife and their habitats. These include the projects ‘Out of Sight, Out of Mind’ – the conservation of the European Eel and ‘Save our Seals’ – conservation of the Thames harbour seal populations, as well on-going fish and invasive species monitoring programmes. There will be a policy component of the work as well as the day-to-day management of a conservation programme.



As a skilled field ecologist with knowledge of UK marine and estuarine ecosystems, you will have significant field experience. These skills are needed to design and undertake surveys, process and interpret the results and provide recommendations for, and the practical implementation of conservation management mechanisms. The Senior Marine Biologist will perform intermittently over a three year period as necessitated by our client.



Responsibilities:

The Senior Marine Biologist will serve as a subject matter expert developing experimental designs and test protocols.
Serve as a technical agent on audit review team assessing marine impact on prototype ballast water treatment systems designed to kill or deactivate marine life.
Participate in the review of engineering specifications and experimental study plans for assessing treatment effectiveness, field observation of the system’s operations and the execution of the tests, and monitoring of long term performance.

The Communication, Knowledge & Outreach Officer – is a project position for the EU funded Building Resilience to Climate Change Impacts, Coastal Southeast Asia (BCR) project. The position is based in IUCN’s Asia Regional Office in Bangkok. This position is responsible for developing, managing and implementing all communications products and related activities for the BCR project in Cambodia, Thailand and Viet Nam. The Communication, Knowledge & Outreach Officer reports directly to the Manager of the BCR project with the guidance of the Head of Communications, Asia.

The objective of Building Coastal Resilience in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand is to increase adaptive capacity of people and the ecosystems on which they depend to cope with the anticipated impacts of climate change and plan for DRR, through sound governance and planning. The project will strengthen the ability of local government and local people to plan for, and adapt to, future climate risks in eight coastal provinces between Ho Chi Minh City and Bangkok. The project will identify best practices being developed by local people and provide opportunities for communities in different parts of the coastline to learn from each other. The project will use top-down and bottom-up approaches to ensure policy messages are disseminated at all levels. Networking, study visits, and an annual forum will be used to share knowledge with the other 12 provinces that make up the coastal corridor between Ho Chi Minh City and Bangkok.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop and implement a project communications strategy;
Ensure that IUCN branding, EU visibility and other guidelines are followed;
Work effectively with IUCN Country Offices and project partners in Cambodia, Thailand and Viet Nam, including the closely related EU funded CARE project;
Edit and synthesize documents, ensuring correct language use and final output is logical and easy to read;
Produce high quality communications products in a range of formats including reports, publications, brochures, policy briefs, web stories, press releases, e-news, short films, podcasts, etc.;
Oversee and manage production processes, ensuring quality standards and budgets are met;

Program Associate, EDF

Boston, MA



The Program Associate will support program staff within the New England Regional team of the Oceans Program in our Boston, MA office. This position involves confidential and sensitive information and deals with a diverse group of internal and external callers and visitors. Independent judgment is required to plan, prioritize and organize your workload within this busy program.


Key Responsibilities

Process expense reports and invoices and track expenses against budgets. Assist in monthly process of forecasting future spending plans.
Administer contracts for consultants, including assistance in drafting contracts, working with the Accounting Department to ensure payments of contracts and with program staff and consultants to ensure the obligations of contracts are fulfilled.
Maintain heavy calendar. Insure adequate preparation for each meeting including agendas, background information, deliverables, etc.
Handle all travel arrangements.
Provide administrative support including faxing, copying, and document and presentation preparation.
Conduct research and apply excellent organizational, communication, and planning skills in preparing correspondence and reports, briefings, correspondence, memos, charts, tables, graphs, business plans, and responding to requests for information.
Work with staff to prepare and finalize individual work plans, as well as track program progress on work plan elements.
Assist in preparation of work products including: conducting background research, preparing summary documents, preparing sections of reports, interfacing with contractors such as web and graphic designers, organizing final layout, and proofreading documents.
Act as liaison between department and non-department personnel. Insure they get proper response and attention.
Screen and prioritize requests from within department.
Handle confidential and non-routine information.
Act as a liaison with other internal departments/programs as well as other organizations and associations.
Work independently and as part of the team on special nonrecurring and ongoing projects, which may include, planning and coordinating multiple presentations, disseminating information, proofreading documents, etc.
Plan and coordinate internal and external meetings and retreats when necessary.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree preferred with 3 years of relevant experience in a similar position.
Highly proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other software applications.
Experience with budgeting, accounting and/or bookkeeping.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interface well with all programs/departments in the organization and to represent the Oceans Program in a highly professional manner.
Excellent written and oral communication skills. Must be well organized, motivated, and detail-oriented.
Research, analytical, and writing skills required in order to gather and summarize data for reports, find solutions to various problems, and prioritize work.
Ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines.
Ability to work in a team setting and also to work independently with minimal supervision.
Position requires demonstrated poise, tact, and diplomacy. Must be comfortable handling confidential and sensitive information.
Demonstrate initiative and problem solving skills.
Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
Interest and/or experience in environmental advocacy preferred.

SeaWeb seeks a Program Assistant to be based in its Washington, D.C. area office. This is a full-time position with a benefit package. The anticipated start date is early to mid June 2011.

Position Summary: The Program Assistant will provide a broad range of programmatic, development, and administrative support to the organization's Vice President of Organizational Effectiveness and Operations ("Vice President"). The Program Assistant will work closely with SeaWeb finance, operations, communications, science, and sustainable markets teams.



Core Responsibilities:
Development Support (45 percent):

Support grant administration by organizing and maintaining grant administrative files (letters of interest, proposals, award acceptance correspondence, reports, summary sheets) and master calendar for proposals and reports.
Work with SeaWeb staff to ensure appropriate materials are delivered to organization's funders on time.
Assist with foundation, major donor research and outreach efforts, including help organize fundraising and other cultivation events.
Assist with donor acknowledgement activities.
Maintain current, comprehensive data on organizational funders.
Assist with logistics for Board of Directors' Fundraising Advisory Committee.

Operations Support (40 percent):

Provide basic administrative support to the Vice President by maintaining calendars, scheduling meetings, assisting with travel arrangements, filing, making phone calls, ordering supplies, and helping manage workflow that requires approval, input, and response of Vice President.
Draft, edit and finalize memoranda, correspondence, and reports for Vice President.
Relay technical questions from staff regarding issues with computers and equipment to IT consultant and work to ensure that technical issues are resolved.
