Udall Foundation
CIVILITY. INTEGRITY. CONSENSUS
130 South Scott Avenue, Tucson, Arizona 85701 TELEPHONE: 520.901.8500   FAX: 520.670.5530

The Udall Foundation is pleased to announce our 2017 internship and scholarship program opportunities for Native American and Alaska Native students. We request your assistance in identifying students who would be excellent candidates for our programs and encouraging them to apply.
The Native American Congressional Internship program is a fully-funded, ten-week summer internship in Washington, DC, for Native American and Alaska Native undergraduate, graduate, and law students. Interns work in congressional and agency offices where they have opportunities to research legislative issues important to tribal communities, network with public officials, and experience an inside view of the federal government. The Foundation provides airfare, housing, per diem, and a $1,200 educational stipend. The application deadline is January 31,2017.
The Udall Scholarship program awards merit-based scholarships for college sophomores and juniors pursuing studies leading to a public service career in tribal health, tribal public policy, or the environment. Two- and four-year college students are encouraged to apply. Scholars participate in a five-day Orientation in Arizona to learn from and network with experts, their peers, and members of the Udall family. The award includes life-time membership in the Udall alumni community, a vibrant professional organization offering job and internship opportunities, and up to $7,000 for tuition, fees, room and board, and books and supplies. Applications must be submitted through a Udall faculty representative at the student's college or university. In 2017, 60 awards will be made; we anticipate awarding up to 20 of these in the tribal public policy and tribal health categories. The application deadline is March 15, 2017.
The Udall Foundation honors Morris K. Udall's thirty years of service in the U.S. House of Representatives and Stewart L. Udall's service as Secretary of the Interior. Both men worked tirelessly for the rights of American Indian and Alaska Native peoples as well as the environment. Since 1996,116 tribes have been represented in the scholarship and internship programs.
We encourage you to visit our website at www.udall.gov. There, you'll find our free webinar schedule, tips for the applications, and more. We are eager to hear from interested students, faculty, staff, and educational partners directly by email or phone. If you feel you have received this packet in error or know of someone else who should be receiving this information, please let us know. Thank you for your time and assistance. We look forward to working with you!
Sincerely,

Robert M. Jenkins Memorial Reservoir Research Scholarship

Robert M. Jenkins Memorial Reservoir Research Scholarship
The Reservoir Committee (RC), a technical committee of the Southern Division AFS, created the Robert M. Jenkins Memorial Reservoir Research Scholarship in 1997. The Scholarship is intended to provide financial assistance to graduate students conducting reservoir-related fisheries research in the southeastern United States who show exceptional progress in their research, education, and professional endeavors.
At present the Jenkins Scholarship is fully sponsored by Mossback Fish Habitat. The recipient(s) of the Jenkins Scholarship receive a check for $1,000 and will be recognized at the Spring SDAFS business meeting. Typically, two $1,000 scholarships are awarded annually. The awards will be made directly to the student and not the student’s educational institution. It can be used for any aspect of the graduate education including, but not limited to, tuition, textbooks, equipment, travel or living expenses. It is not intended to replace any funding obligated to the student.
Selection criteria are based on research, education, professional and civic activities, among other things. Research and education activities can be associated with any aspect of reservoir ecosystem management. Professional activities in fishery-related student organizations, AFS Chapters, and similar organizations are desirable. Applicable public services include any voluntary activities but those pertaining to conservation and fishing are most desirable. A committee of RC members will review applications and present recommendations to the RC Chair for approval. All application materials must be received by December 1st each year.
2016 Recipients: The SDAFS Reservoir Committee is proud to recognize Clay Raines and Cole Harty as the recipients of the Robert M. Jenkins Memorial Reservoir Research Scholarship sponsored by Mossback Fish Habitat for 2016. Clay’s M.S. research at Mississippi State University focused on the influence of shade on reservoir water quality, macroinvertebrates, and fish. He currently works for the Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute restoring wild populations of endangered and threatened aquatic species in the southeastern US and hopes to pursue a PhD and remain in fisheries conservation. Cole expects to graduate with his M.S. from Tennessee Tech University in December of 2016. His research centered on the use of popular catfish sampling gears in large reservoirs. The use of these gears in large reservoir systems had not been extensively studied. Upon graduation Cole plans to pursue a career as a fisheries biologist and hopes to land a job working with sport fish in large river or reservoir systems. Congratulations Clay and Cole!
Scholarship Application Process:
1.    Application materials must be received by close of business December 1. This includes the Application Form and associated documents and letter of recommendation. Application materials should be submitted via email to Jeremy.Shiflet@ky.gov. Please contact Jeremy to make other arrangements for application material delivery, if necessary. The RC scholarship committee chair will distribute the application packets to the review committee.
2. Fill out the Application Form.
3.  Provide a copy of your research proposal which indicates relevance to reservoir fisheries science in the southeastern United States.
4. Provide a letter of introduction and recommendation from the applicant’s major professor or faculty advisor. This letter should state how long and in what capacity they have known the applicant. In addition, the letter should address the applicant’s promise as a future fisheries scientist. It should be submitted via email to the scholarship committee chair (see info above).
5.  After the deadline has passed, the review committee will rank the compiled information for the applicants and present their selection to the RC Chair for approval. LSU Study Links Wild Hogs' DNA to Waterborne Pathogens in Central LA

Feral hogs have long been known as an invasive, disease-carrying scourge on the Louisiana landscape, wreaking havoc on agriculture, hunting leases and even other wildlife caught in their wake.
In the last 10 years they've spread rapidly, and recent evidence suggests they are now present in all 64 of the state's parishes.
But a study conducted last summer by the LSU Ag Center's School of Renewable Natural Resources shows an alarming correlation between feral hogs and the presence of a multitude of pathogens including E. coli, leptospirosis and salmonellosis in water bodies in Central Louisiana.
The three-month project sampled  40 bodies of water between Alexandria and Natchitoches adjacent to the Kisatchie National Forest, and the news wasn't good for humans - or other wildlife.
"Based on one or more criteria, every site evaluated was potentially unsafe for human-water and wildlife-water contact," the report states.
At 22 of the sites, DNA fingerprinting positively matched E. coli with fecal samples from feral hogs. Pathogens that cause leptospirosis were found at 34 sites, Klebsiella pneumonia was found at all 40 sites and salmonellosis was located at nine sites, the report states.
According to the report, the pathogens can cause severe intestinal diseases, kidney damage, liver failure or mortality (if untreated) in humans. For other wildlife, including white-tailed deer, turkeys, squirrels, raccoons and waterfowl, they can cause kidney damage, renal failure, spontaneous abortions, respiratory illnesses, gastrointestinal illnesses and death.
Scott Durham, director of species management for the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, said the research was an eye-opener.
"I think it was probably a little bit surprising how many of those pathogens were there, and the levels the researchers found them at," Durham said. "I don't think it surprised us that hogs were carriers and sources of these diseases, but this study gives some real good evidence using DNA sampling techniques that drilled home the way the diseases seem to be getting from one place to another."
Aside from the potential human health risks associated with the pathogens in the water, Durham said the research results have broad implications for other wildlife - and the biologists who study them.
DNA fingerprinting in the study revealed that feral hog family groups were moving - or being moved - great distances in the region, up to 30 miles at a time.
"The take home message is to get rid of the pigs somehow, some way, over time, and not move them around. It's illegal to transport and release them," Durham said. "We have to contain them and eliminate them. They look to be the main way these pathogens are being brought around."
Durham said the state's Department of Health and Hospitals had reviewed the report results as they related to human safety, and may be commenting on it regarding recreational activities like swimming, boating, hunting and kayaking in the area.
"Some of the levels were definitely unsafe for humans," he said.
