Ghost Fishing Crab Trap Study
We are looking for someone to help with a derelict
crab trap project funded through April 2013. An official announcement
will soon be working its way through official HR channels as an RA
position. However, in the meantime we could also
hire a student worker, transient worker, etc. We are looking for
either one or two individuals who could help with a ghost fishing crab
trap study along the coast and an effort to develop an education and
outreach program about marine debris and derelict
crab traps. Other duties might include contacting potential partners
for next year’s derelict crab trap rodeos. If you know of anyone,

Scientist/Engineer in Coastal Modeling
The
Water Institute of the Gulf is an independent research-driven entity
dedicated to advancing the understanding of coastal and deltaic systems
and
to the application of scientific and technological solutions. The
institute invites applicants for a Scientist or Engineer with strong
H&H and Coastal Modeling background. We specifically seek
outstanding applicants with background in hydraulics, hydrology,
and numerical modeling of Riverine and estuarine systems, and coastal
wetlands. Applicants must be proficient in the use and applications of
numerical models to coastal watersystems, able to communicate
efficiently with federal and state agencies, and can
produce technical publications. M.S. degree is required and Ph.D.
degree is desirable. Familiarity with widely used numerical modeling
packages is a plus.

Responsibilities:
Under the immediate supervision of the Project Leader and assigned to
the Justin Hurst Wildlife Management Area (WMA) of the Central Coast
Wetlands Ecosystem Project (CCWEP). The Fish and Wildlife Technician
assists with habitat management, infrastructure maintenance, equipment
maintenance, public use, and research on the Justin Hurst WMA and other
WMA’s within the CCWEP project area. Work involves the collection of
biological data and assisting with wildlife research projects as
assigned. Main emphasis will be on the management of wildlife habitat
and maintaining and repairing infrastructure/complex equipment needed
for research, habitat management or maintenance activities. Assists with
public hunting and other public use programs on assigned area where
applicable. Provides wildlife management information to hunters, land
managers, other user groups and the general public. Performs
additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division Branch
rules, regulations and procedures. NOTE: Current TPWD Fish &
Wildlife Technician II employees may apply for this position at their

Minimum Qualifications:
· Education: Graduation from high school or GED.
· Experience: Two years relevant experience.
Acceptable Substitution:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s
degree in a relevant field may substitute for the required experience.
Preferred Experience:
· Two
years work experience in wildlife management, farm or ranch operations,
building maintenance, vehicle repairs and heavy equipment operation and
maintenance.
· Two years experience using computers to include word processing and spreadsheet programs.
· Licensure/Certifications:
· Must
possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days of employment, a valid
Class "C" Texas driver's license. NOTE: Retention of position contingent
upon obtaining and maintaining license.
· Must
possess or be able to obtain, within one year of employment, the
National Wildfire Coordinating Group’s (NWCG) Fire Fighter Type II
certification.
· NOTE:

Research Experiences for Undergraduates
The
LSU Department of Environmental Sciences seeks applications for one
Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) position. The
undergraduate student will
spend 8 weeks in the summer of 2012 conducting research in a chemical
oceanography laboratory and in a microbiology laboratory.
The
research will include microbiological analyses of environmental
samples, molecular analysis of microbes and microbial communities in
response to changing environmental
parameters such as exposure to Deepwater Horizon oil, analyses of
pigments and nutrients in water samples collected from the Louisiana
coast, field collection of samples in Port Fourchon, LA and in Grand
Isle, LA, analysis of phytoplankton and zooplankton,
use of remote sensing for ground-truthing data, and other topics of
interest.
The
student will be expected to maintain a laboratory notebook and
participate in weekly lab meetings. At the end of the 8 weeks, the
student will present his/her
findings in a 30-minute presentation and in the form of a scientific
manuscript.
The
student must be mature, responsible, capable of working independently,
and have a strong background in biology and chemistry (2 semesters of
general biology
and 2 semesters of general chemistry, and a B or higher average in the
2-4 semesters).
The student will be conducting research in the laboratories of Dr. Crystal N. Johnson (http://www.environmental.lsu.edu/johnson.shtml)
and Dr. Ed Laws (http://www.environmental.lsu.edu/edlaws.shtml).
Students
will receive a stipend of up to $4,500, depending on level of expertise
and successful completion of the REU program. Successful completion of
the REU
program entails maintenance of laboratory notebooks, presentation of
results at weekly lab meetings, substantial progress towards their
projects, and the final manuscript and PowerPoint presentations.
A moderate budget will also be provided for relocation to Baton Rouge and shared housing on the LSU campus.
The
REU participant will be selected based on high school and undergraduate
grade point averages (minimum 3.0), ACT scores (minimum 20), letters of
recommendation
from three teachers or professors, a 1,500-word essay demonstrating
his/her interest in science, and formal interviews.

Incumbent will work as crew member with the following duties: (1) field sampling of fishes, physical habitat data, water quality, and invertebrates; (2) laboratory technician responsible for sorting and identification of fishes and invertebrates; and (3) data entry. Other duties may be assigned as needed. Incumbent will be responsible for accurate measurement and recording of field data as well as care and maintenance of field gear, laboratory facilities, and vehicles.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: BS in fisheries or a closely related field. The selected candidate(s) will have experience in scientific methods of measurement and recording of field data and handling of fish, water chemistry, habitat, and aquatic macroinvertebrate samples. In addition, knowledge of laboratory methods and procedures is necessary. Field season begins in June and will continue until mid-October. Additional laboratory work may be available after field season. The applicant must be capable of working in extreme weather conditions. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be willing to work extended stays in field locales. Bunkhouse lodging is available when not in the field.
DATES OF EMPLOYMENT: July 1 to December 31 (1040 hours maximum in a calendar year). WAGE RATE: $8.50 - $12.00/hr commensurate with experience.
