FISHERIES TECHNICIAN
LOCATION: West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, Wildlife Section Elkins Operations Center, P.O. Box 67 Elkins, WV 26241
NUMBER OF POSITIONS: up to 2
DUTIES: Participates as a fisheries technician in a statewide stream classification project investigating patterns relating to fish diversity and abundance, habitat quality and availability, water chemistry, and aquatic invertebrate community dynamics. Incumbent will work as crew member with the following duties: (1) field sampling of fishes, physical habitat data, water quality, and invertebrates; (2) laboratory technician responsible for sorting and identification of fishes and invertebrates; and (3) data entry. Other duties may be assigned as needed. Incumbent will be responsible for accurate measurement and recording of field data as well as care and maintenance of field gear, laboratory facilities, and vehicles.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: BS in fisheries or a closely related field. The selected candidate(s) will have experience in scientific methods of measurement and recording of field data and handling of fish, water chemistry, habitat, and aquatic macroinvertebrate samples. In addition, knowledge of laboratory methods and procedures is necessary. Field season begins in June and will continue until mid-October. Additional laboratory work may be available after field season. The applicant must be capable of working in extreme weather conditions. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be willing to work extended stays in field locales. Bunkhouse lodging is available when not in the field.
DATES OF EMPLOYMENT: July 1 to December 31 (1040 hours maximum in a calendar year). WAGE RATE: $8.50 - $12.00/hr commensurate with experience.
